Christmas Morning Begins at What Time?

by Jerry Ousley
11/16/2006 / Holidays

I remember well one particular Christmas. I was probably about eleven and my brother, Ken was maybe seven or eight. Ken was expecting some sort of Hot Wheels daredevil racetrack and I dont even remember what I was looking for under the tree that year. Anyway I had gone to bed extremely early on Christmas Eve expecting to get up just as early to open gifts. I couldnt wait! You know the feeling that moment of anticipation that makes every second seem like an eternity (why do you think UPS and Federal Express invented next day air service anyway?). Because I had retired early on Christmas Eve with Visions of Toys Dancing in My Head I awoke extremely early the next morning which was the plan but not at 2:00 AM. That wasnt early; that was ridiculous! But hey, Christmas technically began at one minute after midnight, right? I reasoned it out so I would have some logical explanations when I woke Mom and Dad up. Little did I realize that they had just gotten into bed an hour before. Company had been at our house until late on Christmas Eve after which Mom and Dad had to get everything placed under the tree to be ready for the next morning. I was headed for disaster with my plan even before it was initiated.

I thought about it for half an hour so it was 2:30 AM when I woke up my parents, Hey, Mom, Dad, its Christmas! I shouted mustering all the holiday cheer I could manage knowing inside that this was not going to be well received.

Do you realize what time it is, son? Get back to bed! I was shot down. Oh well I had waited since early yesterday evening. I guess a little while longer wouldnt matter. As I passed by the tree to go back to my room I couldnt help but see all the cool things there.

After what seemed to be hours of restless tossing and turning I decided to go back downstairs; it was now 3:00 AM. With all my stirring around, for some strange reason my brother woke up. I told him about the things I had seen under the tree which only made him want to go down too. Hey, there was an idea; let the kid get into trouble this time. At 3:15 AM he came back upstairs crying. Whew! Glad it was him and not me! At 4:00 AM our parents finally gave up and told us to just go ahead and play with what wasnt wrapped. By the time the rest of the family got up Ken and I had mastered all the tricks that could be done with his daredevil track!

Impatience is like that. It seems we can hardly wait for the good things of life; and just like with Ken and me, it leads to trouble. Today credit is easier than ever. Hey, I know, because there have been some things I couldnt wait for and I liked to never got them paid off. We need to be careful or we can commit financial suicide very quickly.

Did you know that we can do the same thing spiritually? By not waiting on God for answers we sometimes do foolish things that always get us into trouble. The Bible says in Psalms 37:9, Those that wait upon the Lord, they shall inherit the Earth. Wow! God is saying that patiently waiting for His plan and answers are the keys to success! Thats a very different plan than what the world describes to us about. The world teaches that waiting causes missed opportunities. I suppose that opportunities are really defined by what God allows for us in His plan. Waiting upon God and being patient for His will is irreplaceable in life. When we put our trust in Him and wait for His timing things begin to happen. Simple isnt it? All it takes is learning patience. By the way, I still get up early on Christmas but I dont go around waking people up; that can be dangerous!
