What I Want for Christmas

by Jerry Ousley
11/17/2006 / Holidays

As the most celebrated and also the most expensive of all holidays approaches, the commonly asked question is, What do you want for Christmas? Living in a land where most of us have over-abundance there is really not much we actually need. Oh we have some citizens in need, like the homeless in the cities, people who have lost everything to flood or fire, and so forth. Will we turn our backs on them or sincerely try to figure out what our responsibility is in their aid? There are some who have lost jobs and this Christmas will be a struggle to pay the bills and keep food on the table. Others may have health issues and are living on disability that will also tend to disable Christmas for them. We cant forget about these folks to satisfy our own selfish desire.

On the other hand an overwhelming number of people in this country are just like me; other than a new shirt or two we really dont need anything. It would be nice to get some great dining gift certificates As the shape of my body reveals, my absolute favorite pastime is indulging in culinary excellence. But I dont need it. The vehicle I drive could use some minor work and a face-lift. Elegance in transportation would be nice but I dont really need that either.

Cold cash is always a good choice. It might not seem very personal but considering that you can spend it on whatever youd like can make it a very appealing gift. But then as long as money is available to pay the bills, buy groceries and purchase a few extras now and then, that really isnt necessary either.

I suppose I could ask for what every beauty pageant contestant seems to ask for That would be world peace. World peace sounds good but when we know what the Bible says about the subject then we also know that this wont happen until Christ reigns on this earth. So theres not much use in asking for that.

I guess Im becoming one of those difficult people to buy for. As a kid (who am I kidding, even as a young man) I could think of a thousand things Id like to have. But as life progresses those things just dont matter as much as they did before. Trinkets and pretties are useless. Im kind of at a stage in life when having less seems better (I know, Im getting weird what can I say?).

What do I want for Christmas? At the risk of sounding unbelievable this is really what I want: A little snow on Christmas Day, the joy of seeing others tear into their presents, maybe a simple gift or two to open for myself, a good family dinner with those who are close to me and that I love, and a good movie to watch that afternoon. Really!

Now this isnt meant in any way to make others feel guilty. If you know exactly what you want and what would make you happy this Christmas I hope you get it. I mean that.

I guess there is one more thing Id like. I wish that all who celebrate this Christmas could come to know the Inspiration of the holiday as their personal Savior. Yes it is really about the birth of Jesus Christ. I know that there are those who are desperately trying to take Christ out of Christmas (I never did like the term Xmas) but lets face it, without the hope of what Christ came to offer the holiday is given wholly to feasting, selfishness, and a chance to beef up the profits before the end of the year. That isnt much to celebrate is it? But the coming of One who gave the best gift of all Freedom from sin and the hope of eternal life Now thats something to celebrate!
