Forty Days and Forty Nights

by Dean Mudenda
11/24/2006 / Devotionals

When I woke up this morning, as I pondered in my heart, I had a sudden realisation that there were exactly 40 days and nights to 1st January 2007. Then I began to think of the references in the Bible to forty days. I discovered there are dozens of them. I picked a few for the purpose of this message.

For yet seven days, and I will cause it to rain upon the earth forty days and forty nights; and every living substance that I have made will I destroy from off the face of the earth. Genesis 7:4.
In Noahs days, the world would never be the same again after forty days and forty nights. The antediluvian world would be destroyed due to sin. But Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD and by faith he and his family were spared.

To the Israelites the glory of the LORD looked like a consuming fire on top of the mountain. Then Moses entered the cloud as he went on up the mountain. And he stayed on the mountain forty days and forty nights. Exodus 24:17,18.
God is a consuming fire to those who do not abide in His will. Here is a lesson for all who would neglect personal consecration to the LORD, through His Word and Spirit. Moses had become well acquainted with His Maker and spent much time in communion, under the cloud, receiving the oracles of God. He dwelt in the secret place of the most High and abode under the shadow of the Almighty.

Then the LORD said to Moses, "Write down these words, for in accordance with these words I have made a covenant with you and with Israel." Moses was there with the LORD forty days and forty nights without eating bread or drinking water. And he wrote on the tablets the words of the covenantthe Ten Commandments. Exodus 34:27,28
God is inviting all those who are willing to enter His covenant. The covenant is for Israel (A prince of God), that is to say, those who have overcome. Do you dare to be an Israel? God was demonstrating to the Israelites that man doth not live by bread only, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of the LORD. The message cannot be any clearer. The Ten Commandments were written with the finger of God.

So he got up and ate and drank. Strengthened by that food, he travelled forty days and forty nights until he reached Horeb, the mountain of God. 1 Kings 19:8
Elijah (the prophet of Jehovah) was here fed supernatural food, prepared by an angel of the LORD, which kept him going for forty days - yet another instance of Divine providence. Would you like some of this food? Then dare to be an Elijah!

And Jesus being full of the Holy Ghost returned from Jordan, and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, being forty days tempted of the devil. And in those days he did eat nothing: and when they were ended, he afterward hungered. Luke 4:1,2
The future of mankind would be fixed forever by the outcome of the ministry of Jesus. The Son of God, who made the heavens and the world in six days, condescends to pray and fast for forty days. He suffered deprivation for you and me, giving us an example of how seriously we should take our salvation. There is no provision for half heartedness. It was secured at a high price.

To whom also he shewed himself alive after his passion by many infallible proofs, being seen of them forty days, and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God: Acts 1:3
For forty days following His resurrection, Jesus revealed himself to His disciples. He did not appear to just anyone; but to those who knew him, believed in Him and were personally acquainted with His ministry. We too have this privilege, if we keep His commandments and the faith of Jesus (Revelation 14:12).

Yet another forty days and nights and 2006 shall be history. What have been the greatest moments for you? Bought a house? Acquired stock? Became a millionaire? Got married? Passed your exams? Graduated from College or University? Got a promotion? Got a raise? Wow! Thats great! But the punch line is: what did you achieve for the cause of Heaven?
If like me your answer is, not enough. Then dont despair! We still have another forty days and forty nights to make things right.

May the LORD bless His word!

In His service,

Dean C. Mudenda
