What is Faith?
by Chris Surber
8/06/2008 / Christian Living
A few nights ago my dog, Happy the Saint Bernard, and I enjoyed a casual stroll down West Street late at night. With her thick strap of a leash in one hand and my thoughts in the other, I talked with my Heavenly Father. We talked about this thing and that; about the needs of all of my friends at the church, about the wellbeing of my children, but most of all we talked about the work that we do together caring for people who long for something more than this world has to offer. Isn't that what faith is really about? Isn't it really about longing for something more?
People of faith are neither foolish nor necessarily filled with more wisdom than the average Joe. People of faith are those who have tasted the mundane fruit that this world offers and have asked, "Is there anything more to this life than work, bills, and more work? Is it possible that there is something more?" Genuine faith is a journey of discovering the Divine. It is much more than a rigid list of do's and don'ts. At the end of the day, faith is a belief in the unseen a search for something more.
In the New Testament book of Hebrews, chapter eleven the Apostle Paul Writes, "Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen." (NKJV) Faith is anything but the simple act of a blind man reaching out in the dark. Faith is the means by which we access the eternal. It is the tool in the hands of the spiritual carpenter who builds a platform reaching out to God! God has given us the gift of faith as a means of knowing Him and a means of finding real and lasting hope in this life. Faith is the door which grants us access to the loving kindness of the grace of our Heavenly Father.
Today, I encourage you to examine the things you find in this life through the lens of faith. Search for something more and indeed, it will be found! In the Gospel of Matthew, chapter seven and verse seven, the words of Jesus are recorded where He says, "Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you." (NKJV)
