Did You Remember to Plug the Meter?

by Nancy Quinn
8/14/2008 / Teen Issues

I admit it. The World Wide Web scares me a little. "Stranger Danger" has entered a whole new level as strangers enter our homes through the internet lines. After hundreds of hours in prayer and trying to teach my son to follow and obey the Lord through childhood, the teen years find me searching for a healthy balance of watching, trusting and slowly releasing my parental grip as I trust my teen to make good choices.

As I move into more of a counselor/advisor position over these next few years, I find one of my biggest concerns is the internet. This innocent-looking box contains a depthless swirling abyss of potential dangers that are just waiting to come into my home with just one click of a button. One harmless inquiry on a search engine can bring up any number of questionable site choices you could visit. What is this mom's answer? I walk by his room once in awhile and ask if he remembered to "plug the meter"! Two teen guy devotional books sit on his dresser and for every hour of computer time, he reads a page from one of his devotional books. I slowly allow him more freedom as a teen, and I trust that the Holy Spirit will give him wisdom in everything he does as I remain vigilant in prayer. I know it's important that he keeps his spirit fed and to consistently remind himself to remain centered as a Christian.

The internet is awesome and it holds a limitless amount of uplifting sites to read and makes research for homework assignments during the school year a little less painful rather than searching through countless books at the local library. My son is aware of the internet's dangers and is careful to not give any personal information about himself when he visits chat rooms to talk to other teens.

So as we raise our teens to become men and women of faith, remember to constantly cover your child in prayer and remind him to "plug the meter"!

Psalm 19:14 "Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in Your sight, O LORD, my rock and my Redeemer."

Psalm 119:9 "How can a young man keep his way pure? By keeping it according to Your word."

May God bless these words as I strive to encourage others in their walk with Christ. Please contact me if you would like to request a specific lesson that Lucy Mouse can teach your children or if you would like a coloring page to be sent to match the story!
