Acts 2:30

Acts 2:30

Therefore being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him, that of the fruit of his loins, according to the flesh, he would raise up Christ to sit on his throne.

1."Therefore being a prophet"

a. David was a prophet and as a prophet he received many prophetic promises from God. The context of these verses refers to the specific promises concerning the Messiah sitting on his throne.

2. "and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him, that of the fruit of his loins, according to the flesh, he would raise up Christ to sit on his throne."

b. This is in part referring to God's promise that David's physical heir would sit on the throne forever.

1). 2 Samuel 7:12, 16 "And when thy days be fulfilled, and thou shalt sleep with thy fathers, I will set up thy seed after thee, which shallproceed out of thy bowels, and I will establish his kingdom.
And thine house and thy kingdom shall be established forever before thee: thy throne shall be established for ever."

2). Psalm 132:11 "The LORD hath sworn in truth unto David; he will not turn from it; Of the fruit of thy body will I set upon thy throne."

c. Although the fulfillment of these promises included the kings of Judah, David knew the ultimate fulfillment was in Christ. Acts 2:31 establishes this.

d. This promise was also repeated to Mary when the angel announced to her she would bear and deliver the Messiah.

1). Luke 1:30-33 "And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favor with God.
And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name Jesus.
He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David:
And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end."
