WALKING WITH JESUS AND DRAWING NEARER TO GOD

by Tanya Kirkegaard
9/08/2008 / Christian Living

Drawing nearer to God is a journey, one that can last a lifetime. Like all relationships, the longer you spend with someone, the more you get to know them, you become closer, the more you understand who they are. The Bible explains to us in great detail who God is and how we can draw nearer to him. He tells us clearly that the only way to Him is through His son, Jesus Christ. In coming to the Son, we come to the Father. In knowing the Son, we know the Father. In believing in the Son, we believe in the Father.

To walk with Jesus isn't something we do on Sundays, or when we get a few spare minutes. It is something we do constantly, whether we consciously realize it or not. So many Christians walk with Jesus unconsciously; they miss what it is he is saying to them. If we are walking unconsciously with Jesus, we are walking unconsciously with God. If we aren't making conscious time to spend with Jesus, we aren't making time to spend with God and thus, we aren't drawing nearer and are failing our calling as Christians.

Every minute of every hour of every day has been created for us through Christ by God. Are we being selfish if we don't at least tithe our time back to God. Does he not desire a tenth of what we have, even our time. Therefore, we should be giving six minutes every hour to our Father, or two hours and twenty four minutes every day, or eighteen hours a week. I ask you, are you that devoted to your Father, for he is surely more devoted to you to offer his Son in your place.

We are created in His image and so often we struggle to understand ourselves and our fellow brethren. By walking with Jesus and drawing nearer to God, getting to know Him, we come to better understand ourselves and the purpose and plan God has set before us. If we don't continually, consciously walk with our Lord and Saviour, we fail to find out who we are and what our plan and purpose is.

If we are not walking with our Lord and Saviour, drawing nearer to our Father, we are leaving ourselves open to our adversary to do as he sees fit. If you are experiencing difficulties in your life, if you feel you are under attack, if you feel like you aren't moving forward in Christ or drawing nearer to God, maybe all you need to do is be mindful of how much time you are spending with Him.

Our walk with Jesus is our own, but it was God's plan not to journey alone. We are refined in God by fellowship and the sharing of the Gospel. We are to model ourselves on Jesus and aim for righteousness. Our creator knows we aren't perfect and sometimes we get things wrong, and for these things he offers us forgiveness. We have many lessons to learn, and sometimes we are blind to the lesson being taught, but we must persevere through all things to reach the glory on the other side.

I am a married mother of 5. I gave my heart to the Lord two years ago. I have been through many struggles in my life but God has allowed my trials to become lessons and tools for teaching and guiding others. I love to write poetry and enjoy the challenge of contributing to my church service.
