BEING A CHRISTIAN ISN'T A WALK IN THE PARK

by Tanya Kirkegaard
9/08/2008 / Christian Living

So many of us, when we become Christians, think it is going to be smooth sailing from here on in, a walk in the park, but as we grow in Christ, we soon come to the realization that it is a daily battle against the enemy, quite often our own flesh, our own desires, our own sinful nature. It is a constant battle against everything we have come to know, and by becoming a Christian, we have made a verbal vow to be a child of God and no longer a slave to sin. Obviously, our enemy is never happy losing to our Lord and Saviour and doesn't take defeat lightly so he will automatically try even harder to get you back. He will use whatever means possible, he knows all of your weaknesses, and will constantly be on guard to take you away from the promises of God. Satan is a thief, a liar, and a murderer. He is a deceiver and aims to destroy everything in our lives. Christ is the only way to defeat the enemy. As Christians we know the battle has been won, but we must always be on guard and arm ourselves, protect ourselves, because our enemy is always waiting for an opportune moment to strike. He will attempt to steal your faith and hope and replace it with unbelief. We can be assured that walking with Christ will equip us, strengthen us, encourage us and ultimately allow us to fight the good battle.

This world we live in is a world of darkness, overtaken by centuries of sin. The only way we can survive in this world, is to die to sin. Firstly we must accept Jesus Christ as our Lord and Saviour, invite him to reside inside of us and to repent.

WHAT IS REPENTANCE

Repentance is the relinquishment of any practice, from conviction that it has offended God.

We must conquer our natural state by living in a spiritual state. We must walk in spirit, be led by the spirit and learn from our divine Holy Spirit, sent to be our guide since Christ's ascension into heaven. Jesus Christ has allowed the truth to be revealed to those whose eyes and ears have been opened by accepting Him as their Lord and Saviour and by believing that he is the true Son of God sent to earth to redeem us to our Father in heaven.

1 There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. 2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death. 3 For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh: 4 That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. 5 For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit. 6 For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. 7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. 8 So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God. 9 But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.

10 And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. 11 But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.
Romans 8:1-11 (KJV)

As Christians we will suffer and be persecuted for our faith. But we must remember that our suffering is partial compared to the suffering of our Lord and Saviour. We must remember that our persecution is also partial compared to the persecution of Christ. By confessing our Christianity to others and bearing witness to Christ, non-believers will judge and condemn. We are expected to automatically be perfect and not do any wrong. We are then perceived as sinners and hypocrites, therefore we must be mindful of our behaviours and actions, making sure that they reflect what we truly believe in. It is amazing how those who are not with Christ understand what it means to be a Christian and are the first to judge those who are in Christ but do not fully understand what being a Christian means. Their understanding is shadowed by unbelief.

15 Which shew the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and their thoughts the mean while accusing or else excusing one another;)
Romans 2:15 (KJV)

1 Therefore thou art inexcusable, O man, whosoever thou art that judgest: for wherein thou judgest another, thou condemnest thyself; for thou that judgest doest the same things.
Romans 2:1 (KJV)

Our Christian walk allows us to understand the promises and reveals the truth of God's word to our spirit. Our walk allows our eyes and ears to be open to all the wonders of God, giving us cause to praise and worship him as our creator. Once that window of understanding has been opened, our spirit has a direct line of communication with God our Father, through His Son, Jesus Christ who has redeemed us to our Father in Heaven. Through the gift of the Holy Spirit, the lines of communication are renewed. Through communicating with God, we draw nearer to Him. In drawing nearer to Him, He will draw nearer to us.

If we remain in Him, He will remain in us, if we rely on Him, he will rely on us, if we turn to him, He will turn to us. As non-believers, we are separated from God, as believers, we are one with Him.

I am a married mother of 5. I gave my heart to the Lord two years ago. I have been through many struggles in my life but God has allowed my trials to become lessons and tools for teaching and guiding others. I love to write poetry and enjoy the challenge of contributing to my church service.
