What Christmas Has Become
by
12/17/2006 / Poetry

It was on the Eve of
the very first Christmas,
that there were no rooms for hire.
No pity, no compassion
for the need so dire
of the virgin who would
bring forth the Messiah.

Born into a world
that He had created,
only to be rejected, scorned,
denied, and hated.

For a King to be born
to rescue their nation
Was what they thought
would be worth celebrating.

The tiny hands that
showed no great force
were destined to be
nailed to a Roman cross.

But before that time came
they would feed and heal many,
and point to the woman
who gave her last penny.

The babe did not come
to judge or condemn,
but to provide salvation
to ungrateful men.

Some would come to know
Him as the Messiah,
while others would call
Him a fraud and a liar.

The angelic hosts appeared and sang
to announce His birth,
Not to kings, but to the lowly
shepherds of the earth.

When one king learned
of His prophesied arrival,
he ordered the death
of all the young babes
to deny His survival.

Satan did all he could
do to stop Him
from reaching the cross,
for he knew better than most,
it would mean his great loss.

Many of HIs enemies
thought they had won,
the day that He died,
only to later learn it was
God’s plan of salvation that
called for Him to be crucified.

The story of Christmas
is not about a man in a
sleigh dressed in red,
but about a babe who
was born for His blood
on a cross to be shed.

If this sounds a little too
harsh for this time of year,
I make no apologies to those
looking only for holiday cheer.

For it grieves me
When I think of all that
He has done,
and then see for so many
what Christmas has become.
