Master the crouching monster

by Adam Bennett
1/12/2009 / Christian Living

Humans are adept at finding excuses for their behaviour. To assist our self-excusing need we are even employing science to seek psychological, chemical and behavioural triggers to explain and justify our actions.

For instance, Swedish research has suggested a genetic factor which is being used by some to explain infidelity. It is possible there is some truth in this finding considering the Bible says, "since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a debased mind to do what ought not to be done." (Romans 1:28 ESV)

Early in the Bible God said to Cain, "Sin is crouching at the door, eager to control you. But you must subdue it and be its master." (Genesis 4:7 NLT)

Most of us don't need to exert much energy to put ourselves in the way of sin... it is there lurking, in easy reach, waiting for us to capitulate. If we lack sufficient sinful drive all the extra encouragement needed is just a keystroke or remote click away.

But God did not create us to be mere animals whose actions are determined by wild instincts. He is not interested in our excuses or our complacency.

Jesus taught us to deal ruthlessly with ourselves when he said, "if your eyeeven your good eyecauses you to lust, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. And if your handeven your stronger handcauses you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell." (Matthew 5:29-30 NLT)

Maybe we could paraphrase this: 'If your television causes you to sineven your plasma screensmash it ...' We must do whatever is necessary to put ourselves out of the way of sin.

But in case we're inclined to blame everything on external factors it's important to be reminded that Jesus said it's our eyes not our appliances that need firm handling.

Similarly Paul wrote, "sin must no longer reign in your mortal body, exacting obedience to the body's desires. You must no longer put any part of it at sin's disposal, and an implement for doing wrong. Put yourselves instead at the disposal of God." (Romans 6:12-13 REB)
