Faith is not a part of the Christian life. Does that shock you? It shouldn't if you look at what it really says and not what you think it says. Read it again: Faith is not a part of the Christian life. Just as love is the number one ingredient in our relationships to people and without it as our motivation, it matters not what we do, faith is the number one ingredient in our relationship with God. Without it, we are not acceptable to Him. Faith, as relating to God, isn't part of our Christianity--faith is everything.

There are two parts to Christianity: God's and ours. God's part is to be God. Ours is to have faith that He is God. It's rather simple, really. God is God and He cannot be anything else nor can He be false to Himself. All He asks of us is to have faith in Him. Notice that I didn't say "believe Him" and there is a good reason for that. The devil believes that God is God more than most anyone and yet he's still the devil. His is not a belief that leads him to action. That's what faith is: belief that leads you to action no matter what your circumstances, no matter what you may feel like doing (or not doing) and no matter what anyone else says. Belief that strong will cause you to act on it: thus, it is faith. That's our part.

Now, for God's part. He's God. That's all that He has ever been and that's all that He will ever be. Because He is God, He is constant and cannot be false to Himself. Yesterday, today and tomorrow, He is always the same. In His constancy we find our reason to have faith. That's why "faith cometh by hearing and hearing by the word of God".

Two parts, one purpose. Faith draws us near to God, where we were meant to be all along.
