Exodus Chapter Six

by Paul George
2/12/2009 / Bible Studies

Moses wanted to know why the Lord has not delivered the descendants of Jacob from their bondage in Egypt and brought them to the land of Canaan. The promise to give the land of Canaan to the descendants of Jacob remains unfulfilled today. The reason it remains unfulfilled today is the same reason why the Lord has not brought the sons of Israel out of Egypt. Moses was under the false illusion that all he had to do is do what the Lord told him to do and Pharaoh would let the sons of Israel leave Egypt. In Moses first encounter with Pharaoh Moses should have learned a lesson we all need to learn in this present age. Pharaoh has his own gods and he considers himself a god and he is not going to respond to the demands of the gods of another nation or the demands of a king of another nation.

What Moses should have done when Pharaoh refused to permit the sons of Israel to go into the wilderness and celebrate a feast to their God, is go to the Lord and instead of questioning the Lord as to why He has permitted harm to come to the sons of Israel and why He has sent him to deliver the Lords' command to leave the sons of Israel go into the wilderness and why He has not delivered the sons of Israel from their bondage is go to the Lord and tell Him without His help Pharaoh will not permit the sons of Israel to leave Egypt. Without the intervention of the Lord the present situation in the Middle East and world wide will not be brought to a conclusion. It is time for Israel, her enemies, the nations of this earth, the United States of America, and Christianity to wake up; the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob is about to do what He did over three thousand years ago in ancient Egypt.

The questions Moses asked, and the charge of a failure to bring the sons of Israel out of bondage (read Exodus chapter five verses twenty-two and twenty-three) is responded to in Exodus chapter six verses one through eight.

Moses is a discouraged man. He admits in verse twelve that he is unable to convince the sons of Israel the Lord will bring them out of bondage because they have lost all or nearly all hope of deliverance from bondage and because they have listened to Moses and Aaron and their elders have asked Pharaoh to permit the sons of Israel to go into the wilderness to offer a sacrifice to their God and complained about the taskmasters their burden has increased. The sons of Israel do not want to hear anymore, of what Pharaoh labeled foolish words. He is unable to convince Pharaoh to permit the sons of Israel to go into the wilderness to offer a sacrifice to their God because he has made it very clear he will not submit to the demands of the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

Here is the message from the past. The first point of the message is what Moses will see. If we apply this to the present age, there is a day coming when the whole world will see what the mighty hand of the Lord will accomplish. The Lord told Moses, Pharaoh will under a strong hand let the sons of Israel leave the land of Egypt. Under a strong hand implies the forcing of one's will upon another; it implies bringing another person to their knees and submitting to the desires of another person. The Lord told Moses this is what He is going to do. In the near future the Lord is going to bring the entire world, both political and religious to their knees and to submission to the desires of the Lord. In the near future the Lord will fulfill the covenants He made with Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and the nation of Israel that He began to fulfill when the sons of Israel entered the land of Canaan under the leadership of Joshua. The difference between the time the Lord began fulfilling the covenants He made with Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and the nation of Israel, He will fulfill the covenants under the leadership of our Lord Jesus Christ.

The second point of the message is what Moses will see Pharaoh do. Here again we see the use of the phrase, under a strong hand. In the statement "by a strong hand he shall drive them out of his land" implies Pharaoh will grant the sons of Israel permission to leave the Land of Egypt, they will be escorted out of the land of Egypt.

The third point of the message is a new name is given to Moses. When God spoke to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, he used the name El Shaddai. El Shaddai refers to the power and authority of God; the new name, Yahweh, refers to the nature and character of the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. While there are scholars who believe God spoke to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob using both the name El Shaddai and Yahweh, when God spoke to Moses and told him, he will see what God will do, and this also implies both Pharaoh and the people of Egypt will see what the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob will do. God told Moses that Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob did not know Him by the name Yahweh.

We know from past experiences and past events in history the Lord does everything He has said He will do according to His time and His ways. Now that it is time for the sons of Israel to leave the land of Canaan there are some very important facts Moses, Aaron and the sons of Israel need to know concerning the nature and character of the God they are to worship and serve, first He is eternal, He has no beginning or ending. The gods of Egypt have a beginning and ending, the Pharaohs who were worshiped and served as a god is evidence of the beginning and ending of the gods of Egypt and the gods of all nations. Second, He is unchangeable. Third, He is dependable. Fourth, He is able to fulfill all His promises and covenants. Fifth, He is all-sufficient; He does not depend on angels or men to supply all the needs of His people, both temporal and spiritual.

The fourth point of the message is Yahweh established the covenant with Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and we can add the covenant with the nation of Israel. The sons of Israel are not to build their hope upon the acts of Moses and Pharaoh, but the One who made covenants with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Yahweh has shown Moses, Aaron, and the sons of Israel there is only one, Yahweh, who can bring them out of bondage in Egypt. Today there is only one, Jesus Christ, who can bring people out of bondage in Satan's kingdom.

The fifth point of the message is Yahweh hears and remembers; He hears the groaning of His chosen people who are held in bondage by their enemies, who are the enemies of Yahweh and He remembers His covenants. In an age when people act as if the Lord has gone on vacation and is no longer mindful of the events that are shaping the future in all the nations, here is the good news, He hears the groaning, the prayers, the pleads, of His people and He has not forgotten His promise to remove His children from the oppressive hand of the enemy.

The sixth point of the message is the promise. Moses is told to go to the sons of Israel and tell them once more, that the Lord will bring them out of bondage in Egypt; He will redeem them with an out stretched arm, signifying both love and a gathering together, and judgments, signifying the punishment that will come upon Pharaoh and the people of Egypt because of their abusing the children of the Lord.

Moses has brought the message from the Lord to both the sons of Israel and Pharaoh. The sons of Israel and Pharaoh refused to believe the message. The question might be asked, why the Lord is sending Moses to the sons of Israel and Pharaoh again when they have made it very clear they will not believe the message and obey the commands of the Lord. Why do we continue to preach the Gospel message when the majority of the people in the world and the United States have made it very clear they refuse to believe the message and obey the commands and statues of the Lord? In the repeated appeals to the sons of Israel and to Pharaoh we see the love and mercy of the Lord. The continued preaching of the Gospel message in this present age is to reveal the love and mercy of the Lord to the multitude in bondage in the kingdom of Satan.

In this present age we need to heed the words of the Lord to Moses when he came the place where he realized the deliverance of the sons of Israel will be accomplished when the Lord intervenes, until then all things remain the same.

Today we are in a holding pattern; we are waiting to see what the Lord will do to bring His children out of the bondage in a land that is not theirs. To date we have seen an example of what the Lord will do, but just as it was in the days of Moses who believes what they have seen. In this present age we are witnessing the work of the strong hand of the Lord.
