Doing what's right in the movies!
By Dana Chaffin

On March 17th Advent Film Group (AFG) releases on DVD their first Christian movie, Come What May. This movie takes on the controversial issue of abortion from a Christian standpoint. However; many other issues are also represented to prove that you must chose to do what's rightcome what may. The movie was filmed at Patrick Henry College (PHC) in Purcellville, Virginia by a crew of 40 home school students overseen by a few film professionals. This may be Advent Film Group's first movie, but the quality of the production and story are not that of a first film. AFG has a very unique way of operating their productions and an outstanding way to make sure that the public will get many more Christian movies.
Come What May has a powerful story and a firm legal/moral argument against abortion with evidence that could reverse the Roe v. Wade verdict. The story follows a young law student, Caleb Hogan, as he tries to prove to his mom, Judith, that his decision to transfer to PHC is the right move. While attending his first year at PHC he joins the college's moot court debate team. The team is assigned to argue against Roe v. Wade. Caleb has a hard decision to make because his mom at the same time is fighting a similar case, in the U.S. Supreme Court, on the opposite side. He struggles while learning that he must stand up for what he believes even if his mom doesn't understand or if he loses the prestigious competition. The movie keeps you in suspense on how the events will all come together.
Patrick Henry College founded in 2000 is a Christian institution with a passion to see its students make an impact for Christ. PHC is funded by generous supporters that believe in the principles of the college. The college takes no Federal funding so that it is not regulated in any way by the Government. PHC founder and present Chancellor, Dr. Michael Farris, believes in the vision of Advent Film Group and not only allowed filming at the college, but also wrote the legal structure for the movie and acted as himself in the movie. Farris also founded the Home School Legal Defense Association in 1983 because he understands that home school students deserve the same rights as public school students. Patrick Henry College is known as a legal debate powerhouse winning its most recent National Moot Court Championship in January 2009. The story of Come What May was modeled after an event PHC encountered previously during a National Moot Court Competition. The challenge to the PHC moot team was to defend gay rights, but the team refused. They were qualified enough to debate the issue, but they chose to stand up for their beliefs even though they would forfeit the win. That team went on to win the next Championship.
Advent Film Group (AFG) was founded by home school dad and filmmaker George Escobar. He attended the American Film Institute, knows the film industry and in the past was an executive for AOL and Discovery. AFG has a different vision of how to run a production company by training home school and college students to handle every aspect of film production. Students can learn more by hands-on experience. They teach the students about lighting, makeup, editing, distribution, etc. In Come What May the students were in charge of one camera, writing the story, setting up props, and every other technical area. In a sense they are training up their own future competition, but that is their goal to bring up the next generation of Christian filmmakers. AFG has already had students that have successfully started their own production companies. Escobar says that the best part about working with students is "seeing them transform and seeing the Lord work in all aspects." AFG is already working on several future movies including the next about a father/son relationship and Godly manhood. Also in the future for AFG is an online course for filmmakers. Escobar said it was designed for home school students with an opportunity to work directly with AFG.
This is a must see movie! It has something for everyone. There is a love story, a suspense aspect, and a lot of sound advice to make you think. The main positioning the movie makes you really look at what you believe and are you willing to stand up for your beliefs? The movie will be released on DVD and sold wherever you find Christian films or you can buy it from the movie's website www.comewhatmaythemovie.com
