The cows are calling
their magnificent bellowing
reach across the slough
across pastures and
through the trees
carried by the wind
reaching my ears and teasing
my senses
their simple life
mating and chewing
sleeping then anxious for sun's
warmth upon their hides
not realizing that
one day
oh yes one day
weight gained from their good life
will cost them
since beef cattle have endings
to this gracious living.
