The Rising Womn

THE RISING WOMAN
About seven years ago, I had to finish a Diploma in Art course, and I decided
to sculpture a rising woman. In the Catholic faith, Mary, the Mother of Jesus , was deemed to be assumed into heaven, body and soul, because she had carried the true God and true Man in her womb and could not be allowed to return to dust. So I thought I would bring out a rising woman from the stone.
I hacked and hacked away in the front garden, and passers' by would stop and ask what I was doing.
I had never done this before, and I could not get the expression right until I realized that when rising up to heaven you would see, and go through the cross, before you entered. I gouged a kind of cross on her forehead, to show that we will all see it as we move into heaven, not with a trailer full of possessions, but with gratitude because Jesus has died on the cross for us, and has opened up the gate into heaven, In Him, With Him and Through Him. Her expression changed, she was softer, happier.
Later on, because we have had a terrible drought in Australia, we took out the front garden, and made it a pebble garden. So the Rising Woman stood alone in a large swirl of different coloured pebbles. But she was not alone for long. Suddenly little yellow flowers started to appear among the pebbles. How they survive I do not know, but now she is almost completely surrounded by these little yellow flowers.
They cover the sides of the soil rising up from the water, (we look over a great lake), and now they have risen up over the beach front to inhabit our garden. I see them as her children, bright and happy, and beginning to celebrate Easter 2011 with joy and peace. copyright Hilarie Roseman Easter 2011
