Back and Forth
by PamFord Davis Yesterday, I was busy at my kitchen sink and viewed an unexpected free show through my window. A lovable young boy with a crew cut from next door was giving one who looked younger still, a ride on his big four wheeler through a harvested wheat field behind our home. At first, it was just a noisy diversion from mundane chores but it catapulted into a high dive daydream. The two went back and forth repeatedly and I thought of man's fascination with transportation. Infants are obsessed with moving; it begins in the womb as they diligently squirm, kick and roll making a good night's sleep only a fond memory for mommy. Soon after birth, they roll over for the first time followed by scooting across their crib; a few months later, they master the art of crawling and they are off to the races. Self-confidence propels them to walking unassisted and boredom seeks a new outlet. They become fascinated with little cars and tricycles to ride upon, back and forth, they ride, going nowhere but loving the ride. Children ride skateboards, bikes or scooters. If a fad has wheels, it is a necessity and parents and grandparents foot the bill. It breaks the guardians in gently in preparation for cars, trucks, gasoline, tags and insurance. Terrible Twos mushroom into Tempestuous Teens and will pass the initiation into adulthood through the passing of time and steering of the wheel. I remember as a teen driving an old jalopy in a baseball field behind our home back and forth, around and around at 25 cents a gallon gasoline. Where is the motivation? What is the destination and why are we in such a gall-dang hurry to get there? "Many will roam about, and knowledge will increase (Daniel 12:4b HCS)." I guess we are just restless and victims of discontent, always in search of greener pastures and a quest for adventure and knowledge. My step is slower and roaming is more of a ramble. I have learned there are just as many weeds and thorns in greener pastures and knowledge is difficult to retain in the senior discount years. I'm not finished yet; is there bidding for power chairs on EBay?
