Diagnosis Terminal
by PamFord Davis

I want a name to pin on my symptoms when leaving a doctor's office. It somehow gives me a feeling of accomplishment to know there is a definite diagnosis and reason for suffering. I take a stuffy nose, coughing, chest congestion and fever more seriously if the doctor determines I have a bad case of the flu. A common cold must just run its course, while the flu is cause for greater concern.

Some doctors may hesitate to give us a negative diagnosis wanting to spare our feelings. I would rather know in order to deal with the situation in the best way possible. King Hezekiah received his news not from a physician but from a prophet. "In those days Hezekiah became terminally ill. The prophet Isaiah son of Amoz came and said to him, 'This is what the Lord says: 'Put your affairs in order, for you are about to die; you will not recover (Isaiah 38:15 HCS)." Diagnosis: Terminal.

Hezekiah did not seek the assistance of a cancer center or drugs from across the border; he sought deliverance from God. The Lord answered his urgent prayers and Isaiah delivered the good news. "I have heard your prayer; I have seen your tears. Look, I am going to add 15 years to your life (Isaiah 38:5b HCS)." No situation is hopeless, the worse things appear the more likely we are to turn to God. Diagnosis: Deliverance.
