The Christmas Cottage
by Dana Chaffin

The Christmas Cottage was released in 2008 and is still available for sale on dvd at www.thechristmascottagemovie.com. This is a semi-autobiographical film about Thomas Kinkade, "The Painter of Light". It gives viewers a chance to see how his passion and talent grew from his childhood years and his mentors. It is a touching story of triumph even through tragedy, hope even through heartbreak, and shows that love is the brightest light of all.

The Christmas Cottage story begins with Thomas in his early twenties returning home from college at Berkeley for the Christmas break. To his surprise he and his brother learn that their single mother is behind on the mortgage and may lose their cottage home. The brothers take on jobs during the holiday to help in any way they can, even calling on their directionless father. The events that happen during this short time are what provoked a young Kinkade and as we all know he turns out to be America's most collected living artists.

Thomas Kinkade was first published in 1985 and since then has become a very well known artist that has made it not only available, but affordable for everyday people to own one of his paintings. He has been put down by other artists for commercializing his paintings too much, but his goal is for everyone to enjoy his art. He has received numerous awards over the years not only for his art, but also his generosity.

The Christmas Cottage is just a glimpse into the life of Thomas Kinkade. The story in this film behind the importance of light in his paintings will leave you speechless. Look at a painting by Thomas Kinkade and see if you can find his "Love note" (the letter N) in honor to his childhood sweetheart and now wife Nanette in the painting. Love truly is the brightest light of all.
