Tithing on Net or Gross
by Melissa Martin "Mommy, why are you not allowed to tie a net with money?" "What?" I ask my young son. "The preacher said not to tie your net when you get money." "I think you mean tithe your money on the net amount, the money left after taxes." I snicker. Josh looks bored. "Hey, Mommy?" "What Josh?" "Why is tying your money gross?" He looks puzzled. "I think you mean tithing on your gross amount, which is the money on your paycheck before taxes are taken out." Josh looks bemused so I grab a few dimes and a few dollars out of my purse to explain tithing in little boy talk. I tell him why we give money to Jesus, the church, and why we want to help missionaries and hurting people. I ask Josh if he wants to start tithing his birthday and Christmas money and his little head bobs up and down. "Mommy?" "What Josh?" "Do you and Daddy tie the net or do you tie the gross money?"
