Dagon's Joy
by Jason Sanders

With a demonic grin, Dagon rubs his hands together with joy. "Today has been a wonderful day.", he thought. "Lucifer will have to recognize my position now. Perhaps I will be promoted and take over as the Prince of Mesopotamia." His dark, ugly face gave a shark's grin as he continued to daydream about his success in the demonic hierarchy. "Baal and Molech will bow to me now. Who are they anyway, to deserve the plum jobs given to them by our master. Maybe, after today, I will be able to take on Lucifer himself!" Cackling to himself, he began to walk around his temple, observing his worshipers paying homage.

The priests began to bring in the daily offerings and placed them down in front of his image.
The offerings arranged on golden trays, were of the best the sea had to offer. Of course, his image looked nothing like him. The merman was carved out of ivory and inlaid with gold. He looked at the image in disgust. If those fools knew who they were actually worshipping he knew they would not be so calm. But he did enjoy their devotion and would help them a little, from time to time, as long as they were doing what he wanted.

Heavy footsteps made his head snap to the doorway. He began to grin as he saw what the four men were carrying inside. The box was covered in gold. The golden lid had two angels bowing to one another, with wings going forward and touching. "This is it! I have it at last! The symbol of the Most High God! He has messed with my plans for Canaan much to long! Now I am in control!" Panting from the frenzy he had worked himself into, Dagon tried to calm himself down and figure out what he was going to do next.

Suddenly he began to hear screams in the streets. "Rats! Somebody do something about all these rats!" As he began to leave his temple to see what was going on he was stopped by a Presence inside of the temple. "Dagon, where are you going, you foul spirit?" Covering his eyes at the blinding light coming from the Angel of the Lord, he replied, "This is my domain, Son of the Most High God. Your Ark is mine, now. I won it fairly from the hands of the foolish people You so love and protect." Even as he was talking his priests began to howl. "What is this growth? It hurts so bad! Dagon, save us!" Clutching themselves, the priests in panic all run from the temple.

"I don't care about them, do what you want with them." The stubborn demon crossed his arms and stood there, confident that the Angel was not going to attack him. "Perhaps your people need to be shown who has the power and Authority and rules over heaven and earth." Suddenly He began to glow as the Spirit of the Lord filled the temple. He looked at the image of the demon and it fell before the Ark of the Lord, breaking off it's head and hands on the threshold of the temple. Angrily, the demon rushed to his image to fix it before his priests come back and was thrown and pinned against the wall by the gaze of the Angel. "THERE IS NO GOD ABOVE THE LORD GOD OF ISRAEL!" thundered the mighty Being.

"Take it! Do not destroy me, it is not my time!" howled the demon. The priests, on arriving back to the temple, saw their god fallen before the Ark of the Hebrews. And so the story was repeated in other cities in Philistia, till they returned the Ark of the Covenant back to Israel, where the people danced in joy, for their Glory had come home.
