Forest Melody
by LaNaye Perkins

It was quiet with only the faint rustle of leaves moving in the breeze. It was so beautiful in this little valley nestled deep in the forest. High in the oak tree, sitting on a limb, was a wise old owl. His eyes were searching and his ears were straining to hear the noise again. He could barely make it out as it floated by on the wind. There it was again. It was music! He turned his head toward the direction it came from, peering through the lush growth to catch a glimpse of its source. He could barely see movement down below, but he could hear that it was coming toward him.

A young squirrel sat beside him, equally interested in this strange sound. He looked up at his wise friend and asked him:

"What is it?"

"Music, and something more my young friend. Do you see the light?"

"What's causing it? I'm a little bit scared, Mr. Owl!"

"Don't be scared little one. You've nothing to fear. It's the Holy Ones, they are with the human down there. The humans call them Angels."

"What's a human?"

"They were created by our maker back in the beginning", the owl shared. "He made them in His own image."

"Ohhhhh."

"Let's be still and watch while they pass below us."

High in the tree the little squirrel and the wise old owl watched as this human and her heavenly host passed by. They could hear clearly now, and there was no mistaking the love in which each word was sang. Floating on the breeze they heard:

"Then sings my soul. My Saviour God to thee. How great thou art! How great thou art!..".

As the human sang the Holy Ones floated around her, while dancing in adoration for the praises being sung unto their King. The sight was breath-taking. All were majestic warriors with their wings spread wide as they glided effortlessly around their charge.

The two perched high above couldn't help but stare in fascination and awe. They continued to watch intently long after the procession was out of sight. Straining their ears till the last note was gone from the breeze. They knew that they had witnessed something very special, and very rare.

"Wow, I didn't know that the humans knew about Him."

"Yes little one, they know and many believe, though there are some who choose not to. "

"How can they do that Mr. Owl? How is that possible?"

"It's a long story. Someday I will tell you all about it. For now, lets just enjoy what we were blessed to see today. Believe me, it's not every day you see a human like the one we saw today. Especially when they have a host of Holy Ones! We must make sure to remember this day."

"I promise Mr. Owl, ...... I promise to remember ."

The young squirrel turned and scampered off to his home in another tree. Meanwhile, the wise old owl sat still, high upon his perch in the old oak tree. It was quiet once again with only the faint rustle of leaves moving in the breeze.

From the beginning the Lord let me know I was to share whatever He inspired me to write. Now, over a decade later, I'm still sharing what He's given.
