He was the apostle Paul fellow worker in spreading the faith and his attendant in both his Roman imprisonment. Luke was probably a Syrian of Antioch, and may have been converted by St. Paul. St. Luke wrote for the whole world, whether Jew or Gentile, but especially for Greeks, as Matthew for Jews, and Mark for Romans.
