Skit for I Corinthians 13
by Sylvia Maltzman Characters: Narrator/Angel (wears white garments/robes and wings attached with Velcro) Heart #1 & Heart #2, bearing hearts with words on them [more Heart characters may be used] Narrator: [right center stage] If I speak with the tongues of men and angels, but have not love [Heart #1 bangs cymbals/high hats on the stage left side of Narrator's head; Narrator is startled] Narrator: I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. [Heart #2 bangs tambourine on the stage right side of Narrator's head; Narrator is startled again] Narrator: And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not love, I am nothing. [Both Hearts rip off Narrator's wings with loud Velcro ripping sounds & toss them to the side. Hearts begin to walk down the stairs & pick up their stacks of hearts. They position themselves down center stage.] Narrator: OUCH! And though I give all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not love, it profits me nothing. [Beginning here, the two Heart characters holding hearts speak to each other. They use facial expressions and body language that demonstrate the "heart" they are speaking about.] Heart #1: Love is patient. Heart #2: Love is kind. [Both Hearts put their current heart in the back of their stacks and show the next hearts. This action is repeated with each new line.] Heart #1: It doesn't envy. Heart #2: It doesn't boast. Heart #1: It isn't proud. Heart #2: It isn't rude. [shoves Heart #1] Heart #1: [raises voice] It's not self-seeking. Heart #2: [shouting] It's not easily angered! [Narrator clears his/her throat and gives the Hearts an admonishing look.] [Heart #1 & Heart #2 stare at each other with hostility for 3 beats, then become embarrassed & look down. Then they look up at each other apologetically.] Heart #1: It keeps no record of wrongs. Heart #2: Love does not delight in evil Heart #1 & Heart #2: [happily, together] but rejoices with the truth. Heart #2: It always protects. Heart #1: Always trusts. Heart #2: Always hopes. Heart #1 & Heart #2: [together] Always perseveres. [Hearts do some kind of secret handshake or other gesture of friendship] Narrator: Love never fails: but where there are prophecies, they shall fail; where there are tongues, they shall cease; whether there is knowledge, it shall vanish away. For right now, we know in part, and we prophesy in part. But when that which is perfect has come, then that which is in part shall be done away. Heart #1: For now we see through a glass, darkly; but when Christ comes, we shall see face to face. Heart #2: Now we know in part; but when Christ comes, we shall know even as we are known. Narrator: And now abides faith, hope, and love, these three; ALL TOGETHER: but the greatest of these is LOVE!! [Hearts #1 & #2 toss all their hearts into the air] [OPTIONAL: Players & congregation can sing the song "1 John 4:7 & 8"] Beloved, let us love one another, For love is of God, and everyone who loveth is born of God, And knoweth God. He that loveth not, knoweth not God For God is love, So beloved, let us love one another First John four seven and eight. Yeah!
