Down The Tubes
by Aaron Goulet

Embarrassing, embarrassing... No wonder why we're going down the tubes.

This is a quote from Sgt. Dave Karsnia who interviewed Sen. Larry Craig, after the senator was busted trying to solicite sex in a public restroom. I didn't plan on writing about politics, but I was really struck by the truth of this statement.

We studied 1st and 2nd Kings awhile back in the men's Bible Study at church. As you read the historical accounts of the reign of kings in Judah and Israel a pattern emerges. The people always followed the lead of their King whether good or bad. I believe a comparison can be made to what happened in Palestine then and what is happening in America today, but there is also another dynamic to what is happening today that wasn't present in Old Testament times- Our Leaders are elected.

I see it as a vicious circle. As our society becomes increasingly corrupt, and immoral, so do our leaders. Those leaders once in a position of power and responsibility can't be trusted to govern morally or ethically. They govern in such a way that they contribute further to the moral decline of our society, and on and on it goes.

In recent years many evangelical Christians have put a lot of faith in these same politicians, to "Retake America for Jesus", to pass laws to preserve Christian values, or basically to legislate America into a Christian nation once again. It doesn't work that way.

Mat 13:33 The Kingdom of Heaven is like yeast that a woman took and mixed into a large amount of flour until it worked all through the dough

(Not a rolling pin that flattens it into submission)

I have met Christians who almost exclusively associate being "the salt of the Earth" with voting for conservative republicans. Jesus said that We are supposed to be the salt of the Earth, not for us to elect others to be it for us. I believe that it is important for Christians to vote their conscience but there is so much more that we are called to do.

There is a saying that salt doesn't do any good if it stays in the shaker. I would say that Christians don't do any good if they stay in their comfortable little Christian subculture. It is time for Christians, individually & collectively, to get out their pews, get on their knees before God and ask His forgiveness for neglecting our calling to advance the Kingdom of God, then get out into the community and get to work.

Yeah, We are going down the tubes. The question is what are we doing to change that?

My name is Aaron. I have been writing off and on for years, but it has always been done for my self. I wanted to start sharing my thoughts with others. I have been blogging for about a month. You can check out my Blog at http://www.moveintothehood.wordpress.com
