Race. It has become an issue that seems to eclipse most other topics of debate. And, sadly, it seems that it is often used to stir up anger, resentment and division in the many communities across our nation. In the midst of it all, people wonder what can bring us all together. In response, I believe the BEST chance we have of crossing those lines and coming together is found in the Bible, and efforts to live according to truths found within. Let me give you a few examples.

            In Genesis 1:27, we read, “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.” Notice that the truth is stated three different ways, communicating the clear truth that humankind of all nationalities (as we all came from Adam and Eve), men and women alike, were created in the image of God. That being the case, we should automatically see each other as equal in every way, where intrinsic value is concerned.

            Additionally, when considering Christians of every ethnic background, the Bible is clear that we have ONE spiritual Father. Malachi 2:10 asks the rhetorical questions, “Have we not all one Father? Did not one God create us?” And, in Ephesians 4:6, we are told there is “one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.”

            What’s more, unlike many individuals who hold earthly power today, God never plays favorites; He treats all people equally. Acts 10:34 and Romans 2:11 both contain the phrase, “God does not show favoritism”.

            However, perhaps the strongest statement about God’s all-consuming, equally-bestowed love is found in John 3:16, where it tells us, “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.” Notice, He loved “the world” (all people), and “whoever” (anyone) believes in Him shall not perish.

            God sees us all as equally valuable. And, when people choose to live in obedience and devotion to Him, through Jesus Christ, they begin to see through HIS eyes. This is a wonderful truth, and the only hope for racial equality.
