In the Potter's Hand
by PamFord Davis

Many schools have eliminated the arts and music programs. That’s a shame. I have no great artistic or music skills. I do have fond memories.

I had both art and music classes in elementary school. After moving up to Junior High School, I sang in the chorus and took art class. Two art activities stand out in my mind; India ink calligraphy and working at a potter’s wheel. I liked the feel of the pliable wet clay in my hands.

“This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord: ‘Go down at once to the potter’s house; there I will reveal My words to you.’  So I went down to the potter’s house, and there he was, working away at the wheel.  But the jar that he was making from the clay became flawed in the potter’s hand, so he made it into another jar, as it seemed right for him to do (Jeremiah 18:1-4 HCSB).”

I’m in the potter’s hand. Am I pliable and submissive?

“Woe to the one who argues with his Maker—
one clay pot among many.
Does clay say to the one forming it,
‘What are you making?’
Or does your work say,
‘He has no hands’ (Isaiah 45:9 HCSB).”
