Remember Mary Tyler Moore?

We were introduced to Mary (Laura Petrie) on the Dick Van Dyke Show. Later, on The Mary Tyler Moore Show she grew in fame. Enter Mary Richards; a single career woman in a Twin Cities TV news room. In one episode, a serious topic turned silly.

Mary was asked to write obituaries for celebrities in advance of their demise. Obituaries could be updated quickly in the event of unexpected deaths. Mary grudgingly worked into the wee hours of the morning. Tired, she began to forget the seriousness of her assignment. Some death announcements took on a humorous life of their own. Lou Grant, (her boss) was not amused.

King David’s obituary is factual.

“Then David lay down with his fathers, and he was buried in the city of David. Now the days that David reigned over Israel were forty years: in Hebron he reigned for seven years, and in Jerusalem he reigned for thirty-three years (1 Kings 2:10-11 NASB).”

David died at the age of 70.

Today, his obituary would likely include his place of birth, family members that preceded him in death and survivors. The death announcement would list the name or names of clergy officiating at his funeral and place of burial. His eulogy…

“He raised up David to be their king, concerning whom He also testified and said, ‘I have found David, the son of Jesse, a man after My heart, who will do all My will (Acts 13:22b NASB).”
