Fingers and Toes
by PamFord Davis

Options for childbirth have really changed.

I had our daughter in 1968 at Indianola, MS and son at Toledo, Ohio in 1971. I was awake and alert both times but my husband was not with me during delivery. Today, many husbands and family members accompany the mother during the hospital delivery. Midwife home delivery is now also a popular choice of many.

I find that interesting because that was routine when both of my parents were born. In fact, my Grandma Ford was a home nurse and much of her work was as a midwife. One thing never changes; mothers are anxious to hold their newborn babies. We want to cuddle them close and count their fingers and toes.

God forms each precious life. He gets first look at each and every part of all babies.

“For You formed my inward parts;
You covered me in my mother’s womb.
I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
Marvelous are Your works,
And that my soul knows very well.
My frame was not hidden from You,
When I was made in secret,
And skillfully wrought in the lowest parts of the earth (Psalm 139:13-15 NKJV).”

As Creator, God gets first look at each and every part of a child’s body.

“Your eyes saw my substance, being yet unformed.
And in Your book they all were written,
The days fashioned for me,
When as yet there were none of them (Psalm 139:16 NKJV).”

You were in His baby book!
