How to Be a Better Teacher
by Tonja Taylor

After teaching for over 30 years (Really--I started teaching private piano  lessons when I was 13. It was my mom's great idea!), I decided to retire from public school (before the pandemic, thank goodness), and tutor online.

Overall, it's been a very pleasant and rewarding experience.  Recently, I was applying for an additional position to teach online, and thinking, Wow, I am really over-qualified!

Then, I had a flash from the Holy Spirit, Who helped me realize that Jesus, the Master, is the Ultimate over-qualified Teacher!

He knows all things, and, just like most teachers, He has had to tell us something more than once for us to understand and obey. He waits daily for us to "get it," and I know, just like we earthly teachers delight in our students' progress, He delights in ours!

So, to be the best teachers we can, we need to yield to Christ Jesus, the Master Teacher.  He's taught me to say that, and on occasion, I have felt Him helping me. (I know He always is, but I really enjoy sensing His Presence!)

The more we allow Him to teach us, the better teachers we will be:

2 But his delight and desire are in the law of the Lord, and on His law (the precepts, the instructions, the teachings of God) he habitually meditates (ponders and studies) by day and by night. 3 And he shall be like a tree firmly planted [and tended] by the streams of water, ready to bring forth its fruit in its season; its leaf also shall not face or wither;  and everything he does shall prosper [and come to maturity].--Psalm 1:2-3, AMPC

I started laughing, thinking of how many more decades of life experience and formal training--in many fields--that I've had, compared to my elementary students. I laughed even more, because I realized that, my "higher" level of these things compared to my students, was nothing compared to the lowest level of the wisdom of God compared to me, an eternal student of His Word!

Jesus is the Master Teacher; the Ancient of Days; the Living Word! He is the Revelation!

21 Assuming that you have really heard Him and been taught by Him, as [all] Truth is in Jesus [embodied and personified in Him], 22 Strip yourselves of your former nature [put off and discard your old unrenewed self] which characterized your previous manner of life and becomes corrupt through lusts and desires that spring from delusion;--Ephesians 4:21-22, AMPC

For indeed I did not receive it from man, nor was I taught it, but [it came to me] through a [direct] revelation [given] by Jesus Christ (the Messiah).--Galatians 1:12, AMPC

So, not only can we yield to Jesus as we teach, but also to pray for the children, and speak His Word over them. He is the Revelation, and He will give us the Revelation we need, including insights into specific strategies to help them. He created every child and knows them better than their parents do.

Some examples you can use are: (10 The God of Heaven will give them success. -- Nehemiah 2:20; (2) They are disciples taught of the LORD and obedience to His will, and great is their peace and undisturbed composure. -- Isaiah 54:13, and (3) For while your loyalty and obedience is known to all, so that I rejoice over you, I would have you well versed and wise as to what is good and innocent and guileless as to what is evil.--Romans 16:9, AMPC

The LORD will give you more. Just ask Him. He will teach you how to be a better teacher!
