Your readers--whether it's your child at home, or a class full of "struggling" students--can benefit from these simple strategies. You can help them become P.O.W.E.R.* Readers! Not only can they gain confidence and positive thinking with the truly helpful tips, but you can sow the Word of God into them!

I have many hours towards a Masters of Arts in Education, and over 30 years' experience teaching. But you don't have to have those to help your students be P.O.W.E.R.* Readers!

What is a P.O.W.E.R.* Reader? It is a reader who knows strategies for success in "Purposeful Operations With Eternal Rewards"! (This is a term the LORD gave me years ago for my book series, The Adventures of Princess Pearl, P.O.W.E.R.* Girl!).

The LORD has taught me, even in the past couple of years, to say, "LORD, I yield to You. You are the Master Teacher, Jesus, and You created these children and know exactly what they need. I open my mouth and ask that You fill it; that You give me the tongue of the learned; that You cause them to not be able to resist the intelligence and inspiration of Your Spirit, by which I will speak. In Your Name and thank You! Amen."

So let's get started with Strategies 13-16: 

13. Having a good selection of different books and kids’ magazines, along with higher-level books and magazines (which will be mentally and emotionally safe for the children to read, of course!) is a good plan. They don't have to be blatantly about God, but every time I've bought books and magazines to donate to my public school class libraries and other places where the children can choose, what I've found is that they are surprised and delighted to find books about God! The little ones comes from God, and they are usually hungry to learn more about Him. Halleujah! 

14. If a child chooses a book or magazine to read and quickly puts it down, it may be that the student finds it too hard, instead of boring. You can ask them questions to ascertain the case. 

15. Some books have the ATOS (reading) levels listed, and you can gauge what would usually be right for your child's grade. Otherwise, you can type phrases like "4th grade reading lists" or whatever grade your child is in, and links will be brought up for you to choose from. Also, remember that, in summer, the student is headed for the next grade, so it's good to have a mix of books from the past year, and several at a higher level.  

16. Teach them the SQ3R (Survey, Question, Vocab/Box/Color, Read) method--important for 4^th grade and up. They may not comprehend why they are doing it, but just teaching them to use this strategy will help them more than they can know at this age.
