Scriptural Promise
by PamFord Davis

“I will make your descendants as plentiful as the dust of the earth, so that if anyone can count the dust of the earth, then your descendants could also be counted (Genesis 13:16 NASB).”

In faith, Abraham received God’s promise of descendants.

He didn’t waste time in efforts to count particles of dust.

Sawdust and woodchips were strewn across the floor of our friend Sam Wheeler’s woodshop. Memories of that sawdust surfaced recently. If you’ve ever been around a woodshop you’ll recall the room’s unique fragrance. I thought of that and also how Sam supplied us with sawdust for the litter box of our daughter’s cat.

Isn’t it funny what things come to mind?

Thinking of Sam’s sawdust, my mind turned to dust of the earth and Abraham.

God turned my mind from a simple memory to a scriptural promise.

Our minds are stretched to learn new truths. Teachers often take their students on field trips; the Creator took Abraham outside to gaze at His handiwork.

“And He took him outside and said, ‘Now look toward the heavens and count the stars, if you are able to count them.’  And He said to him, ‘So shall your descendants be.’ Then he believed in the Lord; and He credited it to him as righteousness (Genesis 15:5-6 NASB).”

LORD, thank You for bringing that to mind.
