Sing Along
by PamFord Davis

Ever find it hard to get a song out of your head? It’s like a skipping record; the tune or lyrics play over and over. I heard a catchy commercial jingle every year on WNDR Radio, Syracuse New York. Summer vacation was ending and it was almost time for school to start. Robert Hall was advertising to lure back to school customers.

‘School bells ring
And children sing.
It’s back to Robert Hall again!’

I’m 75 and still find myself silently singing along.

My husband has worked in radio since he was a teenager and told me a professional secret. Most hit records fit into one of the following categories. It makes the listener sing or hum along, tap their toes, whistle, snap or tap their fingers.

Sing along to this popular hymn!

What a Friend We Have in Jesus/Joseph M. Scriven-1855/Public Domain

What a friend we have in Jesus,
All our sins and griefs to bear!
What a privilege to carry
Everything to God in prayer!
Oh, what peace we often forfeit,
Oh, what needless pain we bear,
All because we do not carry
Everything to God in prayer!

Have we trials and temptations?
Is there trouble anywhere?
We should never be discouraged—
Take it to the Lord in prayer.
Can we find a friend so faithful,
Who will all our sorrows share?
Jesus knows our every weakness;
Take it to the Lord in prayer.
