SPIRIT BIRDS FLY FREE! Sunday School Lesson
by linzy bruno

"Consecrate yourselves therefore, and be holy, for I am the Lord your God!" (Leviticus 20:7)

"So the far off birds, known as the Ground Birds, fluttered and fluffed their wings for another try at flight. They made it up to the top of the tallest tree, but that was as high as they could go and they began to drop down to the earth.

"Help us," they cried out toward the darkening sky. They landed in the heavy, thick grass and ran back in their house. Then only a moment later, a flock of Spirit Birds showed up at their front door. The Ground Birds slowly went to see who was at the door, with their heads hanging low. Their leader opened the door and said with in a low voice: "Who did you come to see?"

"We are here to see all of you. We were watching you and we want to invite you to soar near heaven with us on our next scheduled flight," replied the Spirit Bird leader.

"But we don't know how you soar as high as heaven. We cannot even get beyond the tallest of trees," replied the Ground Bird's leader, with his head still hanging low.

"But, you must understand, we do not fly according to our own abilities, but according to the will and the power of God and in He alone do we put our trust and we have been this way since before our birth!"

"And how did you come to know these strange and unearthly things?" asked the Ground Leader.

"We know because we know God! Would you like us to go and ask permission for all of you to find freedom forever in this heavenly secret?"

"Oh yes indeed! When is your next scheduled flight?" replied the Ground Leader.

"Right now! All you have to do to accompany us near heaven's door is to repeat after me: "I know the God of the universe."

"I know the God of the universe. I know the God of the entire universe," the group repeated over and over again until their smiles became bigger than their faces could contain and they started floating higher and higher.

They waited there in perfect peace for the Spirit Birds to return with God's reply to their question.

And they were back in an instant. "The secret is revealed to any and all earthly creatures who want to know God," the leader began explaining. "And all life begins in heaven. Furthermore, when we know where we come from and where our true home is; with God, our spirits can fly free, even while we are still on the earth."

"Furthermore!" declared the Ground Birds' leader. "When we put our focus into the things of heaven, God will always carry us and then we will soar higher than the dove!"

"Yes, excellent Ground Birds and now that you understand that heaven is our true home wherever we are; you are no longer grounded! Ground birds, you are now officially declared Flight Birds; only one step away from the Spirit Bird flock, God's flock in heaven and furthermore, it's time to celebrate!"

"HALLELUIAH thanks be to God..." they all shouted, as they rejoiced over the Ground Birds promotion all throughout the night……..

So you see Honey, heaven is where all life begins and we can have a heavenly life right here on earth," declared Jayden's mother; closing the large colorful story book. She got up from under the large pine tree and stretched. "God makes our spirits in heaven and then when someone has a baby. Furthermore, He puts that spirit right inside that little baby right at the time of conception," she continued explaining.

"Wow," replied Jayden; her eyes sparkling in the fading light of the sky.

"Let's go in. It's getting a bit chilly," said her mother; putting her arm around Jayden's shoulder.

"So how does He do it?" Jayden asked as soon as she flopped on the couch; still starry-eyed.

"Nobody knows and nobody is supposed to know HOW! That's God's business and He wants us to marvel at the miracle of life and trust in His mystery. What I mean by that is, He wants us to trust in His way, even though we DON'T have the ability to understand it.....at least not until we're in heaven again one day. But I do know one thing, if we always refuse to surrender completely to God, we will always remain grounded, that is not useful, and not growing in God."

"Wow, Mommy.....God is so cool! I love God!" replied Jayden; stretching her arms up toward the ceiling.

"That's wonderful. I feel the same way," replied her mother.

“Come on upstairs and I'll tuck you into bed.” As her mother sat on Jayden's bed; she stared at her curly golden hair, as it shown brightly, even in the dim light of the evening and a tear trailed down her cheek. "Goodnight my precious girl," she said, as she tucked Jayden into bed.

"I really loved the bedtime story Mom, thanks," Jayden hollered, as her mom headed for the door.

"I'm so glad Sweetie! What was your favorite part?" her mother asked.

"Well I loved the whole thing, but my favorite part was.....ummm....oh yeah, when the grounded birds learn all life begins in heaven," Jayden replied. “And can I just tell you one more thing Mommy?"

"Yes Honey. What is it?"

"Furthermore; I am a Spirit Bird," she replied, in a chant-like voice, with her silliest smile and her arms stretched out like wings.

"Well, furthermore, I'm so glad Sweetie," her mother replied with a chuckle. "Sweet dreams, my Darling," she said, as she left Jayden's room that starry, warm spring night.

"and that you put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness." (Ephesians 4:24)
