Resolutions, Promises and Vows
by PamFord Davis

It’s that time again.

What time, you ask?

No silly; it’s not Howdy Doody time.

It’s time for making (and breaking) New Year’s resolutions.

“Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak (Matthew 26:41 ESV).”

I don’t make resolutions; I know my weaknesses and that would just be setting myself up for failure. Yet, I do attempt to make changes in behavior. I need to improve my eating habits and keep a positive attitude. Help is available; God’s working in you and me!

“And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ (Philippians 1:6 ESV).”

Many people do still make resolutions; turn over a new leaf so to speak.

I wonder how many today make vows to God…

“When you vow a vow to God, do not delay paying it, for he has no pleasure in fools. Pay what you vow.  It is better that you should not vow than that you should vow and not pay (Ecclesiastes 5:4-5 ESV).”

People are prone to break promises and vows.

LORD, I trust you. You keep your word.

“Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom,
and your dominion endures throughout all generations.

[The Lord is faithful in all his words
and kind in all his works.] (Psalm 145:13 ESV).”
