Power to Resist
by PamFord Davis

People react to difficulty in varied ways. Having a bad day? Maybe troubled days stretch into weeks. What will you do when life gets you down? Maybe you’ll go on a shopping binge or binge on sweets. Men have been known to wring their hands and pace the floors while women retreat under the bed covers. To them, isolation comes naturally.

Go away and leave me alone…

“Whoever isolates himself seeks his own desire;
    he breaks out against all sound judgment (Proverbs 18:1 ESV).”

We each have a choice in the way we’ll react to problems.

Will we sing the blues or sing God’s praises?

“Sing for joy, O heavens, and exult, O earth;
    break forth, O mountains, into singing!
For the Lord has comforted his people
    and will have compassion on his afflicted (Isaiah 49:13 ESV).”

Sure, I can throw a pity party and give in to despair and discouragement. I know that’s the easy way out; easy but wrong. I can also fight Satan’s attacks on my mind. I refuse to raise the white flag of surrender to his control.

Join me in surrendering to God. It gives power to resist the devil’s schemes.

“Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you (James 4:7-8a ESV).”
