Should You Name Your Business After The Hindu Goddess Durga?
by Ruthie Alekseeva Who is Durga? While shopping, I came across a business named after Durga, but who is Durga? Durga is a Hindu goddess whose name means difficult to defeat. Although her name can also mean fortress, images of her depict her as a light-skinned, many-armed warrior who rides a lion or tiger. Each of her hands holds a weapon. She uses these weapons to restore good in the world by defeating evil, including demons and one’s own negative behaviours. What did she do? For this reason, she is revered as a strong protector and is invoked during wars, when particularly women are fighting injustice and during India’s nineteenth-century movement for independence. Mahishasura, a buffalo demon, is her most lauded defeat. She killed him for torturing people. Durga is also said to overturn evil through her role as a loving mother who views her devotees as children. She is said to take care of them by providing for them, healing their illnesses and increasing their spirituality, but although mention of Durga can be traced back to fourth century AD, if Durga’s specialty is overturning evil and protecting her children from torture and physical, mental and spiritual suffering, has she made much progress? How is she doing? As of 2026, although illegal, three hundred million of India’s people still face tortuous caste-based discrimination, segregation, violence and inequality. They are excluded from gaining land and obtaining education and employment and are blocked from entering certain buildings and using specific resources. Marrying out of your caste can still result in murder. This must result in great physical, mental and spiritual suffering, and this being the case, I would say Durga has not made great progress in relieving the world, let alone India (where she originated from), of suffering and evil. Nevertheless, she is celebrated during five annual celebrations and worshipped by reciting the one hundred and eight names she is known by. Two of those names mean great delusion and great demoness, perhaps this is the reason. Who can do better? When fighting demons, in some traditions, she sometimes requires assistance from other warrior goddesses, but Jesus needs no one’s help. Single handedly, Jesus sent the demons of two demon-possessed men into a herd of pigs, which drowned themselves in the sea. This isn’t the only time Jesus cast out demons, and while Durga holds many weapons, including a club, in her hands, Jesus only required His words and, while defeating Satan, the greatest of evils, used His own perfectly lived life and body on the cross. Is Durga safe? This isn’t the only reason to avoid naming your business after Durga: Durga is also said to empower yoga’s kundalini shakti. Kundalini shakti is a coiled snake of divine feminine energy that, according to Hinduism, lies at the base of each person’s spine. When awakened, it rises through the spine, to the head, uniting with Shiva (a male Hindu god) and liberates from reincarnation’s cycle of rebirth. Kundalini is reported to make those experiencing it aware of their true, divine nature and induces a state of profound trance-like consciousness. Out-of-body experiences of new worlds and spiritual realms and dazzling, heatless lights are seen. Incredible bliss, changes in breathing, incontrollable body movements and power are experienced. Divine knowledge is obtained. Thoughts of “I am” are thought. Some proponents of kundalini claim experiencing healing and physical and psychological changes, including new psychic abilities and improved intelligence. Durga is said to awaken the kundalini shakti through practices such as meditation, ritualistic breathing, yoga, mindfulness, mantras, clearing chakras, clearing nadi pathways, reiki and acupuncture, and while some pursuers of kundalini report enjoyable experiences, others relive traumatic events and feel disoriented and overwhelmed, suffering anxiety, panic attacks, spiritual crises, changes in identity, physical illnesses, difficulty sleeping and interruptions to their daily life. For this reason, some secular, western psychologists describe kundalini as a psychotic episode and refuse to recommend it to patients. Jesus can save you Jesus is the only person who has ever lived a perfect life. He is the only one who has the power to purify and heal us. His enlightenment is found through reading the Bible. The Bible connects us with the great I am, which is God only and not us. The Bible sets us on a path of self-discovery, which, if we are honest with ourselves, shows us that only God is good with our human hearts being deceitful above all things and desperately wicked. After learning this, the Bible sets us on a discovery of God who can make us wise and give us the power to live purposeful and more holy lives. Although Jesus struck Satan on the cross, sin and suffering still reign. In His patience, Jesus is giving all mankind time to repent. Someday, He will return and defeat Satan once and for all. On that day, all evil will be over. He will defeat it single-handedly, using only the power of His words. Give your life to Jesus, instead of naming things after Durga.
