Snowflakes and Sugar
by Sara Harricharan Today it is snowing. Little speckles of wet whiteness. Makes me feel dreamy, almost. As if I am viewing my life from behind a frosted veil, one that has been permanently drawn over my eyes. The wind is whipping about so savagely. Inches away from my warmed nose. Warm, only, because I hold a ceramic mug, steaming with something good. Hot chocolate would be nice. But I'm not allowed to drink it. I've never even tasted it. I hate always having to skip sugar. The choice is not mine. My choice is to live. Therefore, I must not eat sugar. My Dad is my doctor. He says I have a rare type of dia-bee-tees. I don't care what that is. I just want to watch the snow. I bet the snow would taste good. It looks so pretty. I wish I could catch some real ones and put them inside my snow globe. The one Mom sent me for Christmas. She died in Iraq last week. I'll never see her again. I'll always keep the snow globe, especially because her picture's in it. I wish she could see the snow. It looks so pretty. Must be fun to go outside and play in it. I sure wouldn't know. But I'm not allowed to. I hate having to miss things little things like that. The choice is not mine. My choice is to live. Therefore, I must stay inside and keep warm. Dad says I'm not well enough and I would freeze to death. My fingers are cold. Now the nurse is making a fuss. Warm stones are slipped inside my afghan and fuzzy socks are pulled over my fingers. Fuzzy socks are warmer than gloves. Why are my fingers cold? The snow is falling so softly. It doesn't make a sound. Today is the third day everything is growing dark. I would feel so alone if my Daddy in heaven wasn't keeping watch over me. I think He sent me the snow so I would smile. It is hard to smile today. Everywhere is so cold. The snow is so pretty. I wonder if heaven has snow. It must be pretty up there. Daddy, will you let me play in your snow?
