Lucy Mouse Discovers a Fruit of the Spirit, Goodness: A Children's Story
by Nancy Quinn

Lucy Mouse peeked from behind the tree and then raced to the bird bath. She was safe! She was playing hide and seek with her friends on a sunny Saturday morning in the park by the little white church were she lived in the basement with her family. The friends decided to take a break and scampered over to the little pond shaded by the willow tree. After saying hello to Chris the Koi fish that lived in the pond, the friends sat down and shared stories of their week at Vacation Bible School. Chris listened with interest as he heard about all the fun adventures they were having.

Their adventures included lots of fun games and music, and Lucy Mouse always remembered to be polite and wait her turn in line when it was time for snacks. As she described the different crafts they got to make during the week, Lucy showed him the beaded cross necklace around her neck that she made the day before and offered to make something for Chris. The teacher had instructed them to choose a certain number of beads to make the necklace and she noticed one boy putting extra beads in his pocket. Lucy knew that was wrong. She had carefully followed instructions and counted out the right amount to make her necklace so others would have enough beads too.

Chris twitched his golden fins and splashed as he glided through the water after hearing about their adventures. They all laughed and promised to visit Chris after they ate lunch. Lucy's mom invited her friends for lunch too. And after they washed their hands, they hungrily finished their cheese sandwiches and tall glasses of milk. After putting some pieces of bread in a little bag, Lucy's mom handed it to her and asked her to bring a little snack back to Chris too.

The friends remembered their promise to visit with Chris after lunch, and played a game of tag on their way back to the little pond. Lucy tossed the bread into the water and Chris enjoyed his snack as they talked. The afternoon seemed to race by as they told adventure stories. The setting sun shimmered like gold across the little pond, and Lucy Mouse waved goodbye to her friends and hurried home to be on time for dinner. She scampered down the church basement steps and couldn't wait to tell her mom about her day!

Can you find the ways Lucy Mouse used the Fruit of the Spirit called Goodness in the story? Some words that describe goodness are being kind, generous, and honest. Can you think of ways that you can show this Fruit of the Spirit this week?

When you become a Christian, God will help you develop ALL the fruits of the Spirit and He gives you the Holy Spirit to help you do your best each day. If you don't know Jesus as your best friend yet, you can just pray the prayer below that Lucy Mouse and Moose Mouse did, and Jesus will come into your heart and be your best friend too! Did you know that all the angels in heaven are joyful and celebrate when someone asks Jesus to be their best friend? Can you hear them cheering for you?

Dear God, I know I am a sinner. Please forgive me. I believe that Jesus died for me on the cross and that He arose from the grave so that I can live with Him in Heaven someday. I am now trusting Jesus as my Savior. Thank you for loving me and saving me. Amen.

Galations 5:22-23
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such there is no law.

May God bless these words as I strive to encourage others in their walk with Christ. Please contact me if you would like to request a specific lesson that Lucy Mouse can teach your children or if you would like a coloring page to be sent to match the story!
