2009 National Day of Prayer
by Dana Chaffin 2009 National Day of Prayer By Dana Chaffin The 58th annual National Day of Prayer is scheduled for Thursday May 7, 2009. "Prayer America's Hope" is the theme taken from Psalm 33:22. "May your unfailing love rest upon us, O Lord, even as we put our hope in you." This day is for all Americans to unite in prayer for guidance, protection, and strength for the seven centers of power: government, military, media, business, education, church, and family. The 7 centers of power cover every citizen. Government - As America faces an economic collapse, pray that the leaders of government would seek God for the answers they need to get the economy going in a positive direction. Pray that God would install in office men & women who are committed to serving with integrity. Pray also for the judicial system to be righteous in their decisions & to search out the truth in every case. Pray that our leaders have the devotion, principles, & wisdom of our Founding Fathers. These men made their values evident in many documents from their time like the U.S. Constitution & the Declaration of Independence. Military - Pray for troops, their protection, their families, & for comfort to families that have lost loved ones. Pray also for their safe return home. Ask God to place honorable people in their path to deliver hope & spiritual strength. Media - Pray for TV, newspapers, radio, musicians, actors, & athletes. They are a powerful influence, especially on America's youngsters. Pray that they realize the impact they have on not only teenagers, but also young children & adults. That they may understand that self image is worth lots more than selling the latest product. They should present their stories, broadcasts, & lives with truth and integrity. Business - Pray for companies to conduct business in an honorable manner, employees to be loyal, & trustworthy CEOs. With the tough economic times, pray for those who are facing layoffs, pay cuts, & company closings. Pray also that God lifts up Christian workers as His ambassadors in the workplace. Education - Pray for teachers, administrators, & students. Teachers rise up to be positive role models for their students & co workers. School administrators need to make moral decisions about curriculums. Pray that all involved will see that schools are safe, educate, and build kids up. Christian students will find His favor in influencing their fellow students that may be hurting or lost. Church - Pray for the body of Christian believers, pastors and other Christian leaders to be obedient to Christ and withstand pressures of the world. Pray that the body of Christ, Christian leaders, Missionaries, & their families find favor when sharing the love of God. That God's people unite in boldness to spread God's Word. Also, pray for revival throughout our nation. Family - Pray that families come together in love for each other & for Christ. The relationships in the home should be positive, disciplined, & God-centered. Parents should be leaders in the home & set good examples. Pray that fathers stand up to be spiritual leaders of their home. Congress has been calling the public to pray since 1775, when it asked citizens to pray for wisdom in forming a nation. President Lincoln and President Truman were recognized for calling citizens to unite in prayer. In 1988, President Reagan permanently declared the 1st Thursday in May as National Day of Prayer. Public events for National Day of Prayer are scheduled in most cities across the U.S. To find an event in your area check out www.nationaldayofprayer.org or contact National Day of Prayer Task Force in Colorado (719)531-3379. If you are unable to attend a NDP event, plan a personal event with co-workers, loved ones, or by yourself.
