Death and Burial of Beloved Pet

by Marijo Phelps
8/16/2010 / Pets

"Jo, ah, I don't know if I should tell you or not"

My husband's face looked terrible as I went out to the garage to see what was going on.

"Something dug Katy up and I don't know where she is, you don't have to come out"

"Oh, honey, let me get my boots and go with you!"

Katy was our 13 year old kitty who had died of kidney failure that past December. He had been hunting but got his deer and came home 5 hours before Katy passed away. We both were on the floor with her, one on either side, when she breathed her last. There were many, many tears shed over this blue eyed Birman looking rescue who had enlivened our lives for 12 years.

I was thinking right away about the scripture which says something about grief shared is halved as I pulled on my boots.

"This happened before the rains this week because there are no paw prints in the dirt. I found part of the towel we wrapped her in, Jo," my hubby of 25 years was trying to get me up to speed on what he had found.

We knew that she was failing last December before Mick went on his look awaited deer hunt. He had dug a grave in the frozen dirt so I wouldn't have to do that too in case he wasn't home in time. We buried her well and covered the whole area with rocks, stones and more rocks. She was put right next to our older kitty Mitzi, who'd died 5 years earlier of old age at 18 years of age.

We looked all over the 5 acres behind our place and found more of the towel she had been wrapped in but couldn't find our girl so as to bury her once more.

I was almost relieved that Mick and I returned empty handed. We both were remembering so much about our sweet, long haired Katy. She always was our number 1 hear butting kitty and purr? You haven't heard a "motor boat" like the one Katy had. We have had 4 cats for some time now. When Katy passed away, even though he was saying "read my lips, no more cats," He took me to get a kitten for Christmas. I guess that isn't a cat, is it?

We love living in our mountain meadow and wouldn't trade it for anywhere else. As I look out the window right now I am treated with seeing numbers of humming birds going hyperactive over the new, deep red mum I planted today. They are dipping and diving into the petunias and then stopping to play chase with each other. Pretty soon they will be draining my feeders and launching out for their migratory flight to Mexico. Seasons come and seasons go up here each with its own uniqueness and beauty.

We see bear, fox, coyote, badgers, bob cats and the neighbor a mile away has had a couple resident mountain lions on his place. I know that the deer, elk and prong horns were not the culprit. My only regret is that someone had to come and disturb our Katy kitty once she had been peacefully at rest for over 9 months.

I hate to think about "next time" but when another of our beloved kitties goes they will be places in a little "snap top" coffin before we bury them in the back yard of our mountain meadow home.
