Music to my Mission

by Aiysha Jebali
5/30/2014 / Missions

Our God truly is The Most High, most amazing and dare I say it – the most beautifully confusing at times!

Who else would take me on an ’overseas mission’ to my own country…

You may well ask, how can it be an overseas mission then, Aiysha?

Two years ago, I was called to a Christian High School in central Europe, Hungary, called Srospataki Reformtus Kollgium Gimnziuma.

When I prepared to step into my mission, I assumed that I would be an English teacher in the school and find some other kind of ministry outside of it. I figured that my mission would be with the poverty stricken in the area, for example, the Roma.

Although that's a great Calling indeed, it wasn't mine specifically and I would soon come to realise that.

Of course, you know how it is – He knows better! You walk in with a plan and He goes, ’Nah! Let’s put that on the back burner for now… I have something else for you!’

So, I was sitting in my first staff meeting with all the other teachers – and my Russian origin translator was effortlessly translating from Hungarian to English and putting any language skills I thought I had, to absolute shame.

He went on, translating the list of problems going on in our school and how there was even a risk of closure for this 483 year old stronghold for The LORD.

The room was simply filled with negativity and every teacher was down-trodden. All except one, a school Pastor who had the most incredible light around him. He truly believed in the power and plan of God and he tried to restore some hope in the staff.

Meanwhile, the Spirit kept putting the word ’act’ in my head and heart. As the meeting proceeded, God’s true purpose became very clear to me.

All the problems listed such as, a lack of finance due to the great decrease in students, the absence of the lively Spirit the school was once known for, corruption in the Church and financial system that "supports" the school - it all seemed irreversible.

Yet, the Holy Spirit kept saying the same thing, ’Act, this is the time for action'.

I left the meeting with His message being crystal clear. I also knew that I would need practical help and that the school needed to be active, not just me. I was merely going to be the catalyst.

The minute I got out, I felt like I was going to burst because the Holy Spirit had filled me so much. I wrote a letter to our head teacher because I wanted to share His Hope with her.

Two years later, I am preparing to leave a very successful and greatly blessed team of 26. They are a highly motivated team of students and teachers creating change in the school and around Europe. As a team we reach out on a local, national and international level.

God has been and still is blessing our hand in all that we do to glorify His name in the school and outside of it.

It is awe inspiring to see just a few of the things He has done for us!

Moreover, for the last two years, we have taken annual mission trips to London and my hometown of Aberdeen, Scotland…

Wow, talk about seeing your city from a different perspective! We enjoyed such Spirit filling fellowship with several Churches, Bible studies and prayer meetings in a way that I’d never experienced before. It just felt different but in such an amazing way that I can't even describe it!

We were also involved in countless ministries across several Churches and the YMCA.

It is astounding to see what our LORD has done in this team – what He has done in me!

Our mission trip, helped to ignite an unquenchable Fire in our team members. They were able to experience different types of worship, we took part in a city prayer walk and so much more too!

The whole team, at one time or another (on both missions) boldly told me that they had greatly grown in Faith. There have been tears and laughter, both inspired by His Goodness and His Grace.

And, even above this – He has used His gift of poetry in me to inspire songs. I have never been musical, however, I'm now part of a gospel band - go figure!

There is myself and two other members of our team. One creates the melody and the other composes the music. One body with many parts, indeed!

I pray that you would hear God's Call and wouldn't be blinded as I was, initially. Be open to what He really wants from you.

Now, as a team we reach out to the poor, broken and lost across two countries, as well as serve in the school itself - that's something far bigger than I could have ever done as an individual!

Praise The LORD!
