How God Answered My Mother's Last Prayer for Dad

by Annie Glasel
10/10/2020 / Death

Dad fell down on a Friday, after a 2.5 year battle with cancer.  My mother called our neighbor who sent over their two teenage sons and they lifted Dad back into bed.

The first day, my mother was sure that she could take care of Dad.  By the third day, I came home and together we took turns to look after Dad.  We talked about getting some help but Mom was  not entirely willing for full time help.

She didn't want strangers in the house; and since Covid 19 lockdown was still in play, she didn't even know if we could get any help.

By the fifth day, it was clear that even with the two of us, Dad needed more constant 24-hour care.  He tried to get out of bed multiple times and would have fallen if we didn't catch him in the act in time.

Mom was more open to getting part time help but we hoped that Dad would be better by the time I had to leave in a few days.

At the end of the sixth day, Dad ran a fever...which Mom thought was a good thing that his hands weren't as cold as they had been.  After understanding that she couldn't even tell that Dad was running a fever, Mom sat on the couch, realizing that she was not equipped to take care of Dad, especially with me leaving the day after.

She prayed that night for God to send help.  She prayed early that morning after checking on Dad about 4:30 am and noted that he kicked off the blanket.  She put the blanket back on and tucked him in again.   I got up at 5 and checked on Dad, he had kicked off the blanket and I tucked him back in.

When I checked on Dad at 6 am, he was not responsive and something was not right. My mother looked at my father's hand which was turning from pale to white and she said, God had come to receive my father.

By 7 am, my sister - a neonatal nurse who just got off the night shift came and started to cry.  Having gone through this with my aunt earlier this year, she and I both knew that we were looking at the end.

By 8 am, the hospice nurse came and by 8:10, she marked down the time of death.

Even in the midst of her wailing, my mother thanked God...she said that she prayed earlier that morning for help; she didn't know that God would come personally to help her.

Thank you God.  For always having the perfect answer to every prayer.

And Mom said that my father must have known that she couldn't handle the situation on her own, so he made it easy for her and took care of it himself.

Thank you Dad.  For being a good husband to mom, even to your last breath.

I've written to ease my pain; I've written to hear my voice; I've written for vanity; I've written for sanity; I've written for fun; I've written for laughs; I've written for me; I've written for money. But until I write for God, this talent is for naught.
