EMBRACE THE NIGHT: The Simplicity of Sleep

by linzy bruno
1/24/2021 / Self Help

As I lied in bed with my eyes wide open the other night, a stunning revelation came to my very alert mind:

'I'm awake because I came to bed hating the whole thing; the night, accepting the end of the day, whether I found it fulfilling or not and I simply dislike the night. Plus, I hate the dark and lying here trying to get comfortable enough to fall asleep.'

But the truth is, comfort will only come, whence I change my attitude about the night. This is the revelation that came to me.

My revelation also includes another very simple concept:

Being a Christian; a child of God, it's pretty hard to be a fan of the dark, inasmuch as the dark just reminds us of the wicked and that the dark is their chance to do what they want; their "work" for Satan.

But providing that I trust God's Hand of Protection over me in the vulnerable state of unconsciousness; I can still embrace the night for what it is. After all, God made the night for us earth-dwellers in order that we may recharge our batteries. Our cells regenerate during satisfactory periods of sleep, so we can get up in the morning refreshed; ready to do God's Work.

So I have to allow myself to love the night as God intended. It's time to change my whole relationship with the dark, and even my bed.

This is the simplist, most basic revelation the Lord has given me in all of my 50-something life, with the exception of childhood.

I have been suffering from insomnia for many years in my adulthood. Maybe that's why when God gave me this revelation, there was also a sort of side-bar revelation that went along with it:

I wrote a children's story on the subject of embracing the night and for someone like me (hyper) the lesson still applies. The story emphasizes this connection between letting go of the day and sleep subsequently coming more readily. The title is "How Do You Know When You've Had Enough Fun?"
This concept, simple as it is, can be powerful even for aduts. I wonder how many insomniacs could actually get off their pharmaceuticals and rejoin the beautiful world of deep, long-lasting sleep with this simple attitude adjustment?

A Few More Tips--

--Don't go to bed until you are ready; tired, relaxed and with your new attitude in place, as firmly as possible
--Read the Bible to intially fall asleep. Bible reading brings such great peace that reading can lead to sleep

When sleeplessness happens later in the night:

--Meditate on God's Word, count your blessings and give Him thanks and praise
--Try getting up and sitting in another room for a few minutes to regain your new position of embracing the night. Ask God for help getting back to sleep. Also try getting up for a few minutes in order to cool your body back down.

I pray this helps someone, as it has helped me. I slept all through the night last night; only waking once for a few minutes and I can't even say how rare that is or should I say WAS!

--2/20/21: This new attitude is still helping me get more sleep and stay asleep longer.

--5/13/21: I am amazed at how much more deep sleep I am now enjoying ever since I made the connection between my negative attitude about the night and my struggles with insomnia! I am still thanking God and hoping someone else can benefit from this simple idea the Lord gave me.

--8/8/21: Embracing the night is STILL WORKING and getting even better; I never have that dreaded feeling about the impending night anymore, which has freed me to enjoy the daytime even more than before!
