Put On Your Beautiful Clothing and Worship the LORD!

by Tonja Taylor

Clothing is much more than just what we put on our bodies to cover our private parts.

God gave clear instructions on how He wanted His priests to dress, to approach Him and come before the people (Exodus). That was Old Testament.

And of the blue and purple and scarlet [stuff] they made finely wrought garments for serving in the Holy Place; they made the holy garments for Aaron, as the Lord had commanded Moses.--Exodus 39:1

Since my favorite color is blue--and I think it must be God's, because we see the sky as blue, to take a humorous approach--then I like that verse for many reasons.

I also think that "clothing" is an attitude. When I read the following verse this morning--But if you diligently listen to and obey Me, says the Lord, and bring in no burden through the gates of this city on the Sabbath day, but keep the Sabbath day holy (set apart to the worship of God), to do no work on it,--Jer. 17:24--then it seemed to me that "no burden" meant "no bad, ungrateful or sorrowful attitude brought into the house of God,' because that can be distractions to ourselves, others, and even the preacher, and dilute or even stop what the Spirit of the LORD wanted to accomplish at that meeting!

Also, "clothing" can be "sackcloth," which means grief or sorrow, and the LORD Jesus came to deliver us from that, and to clothe us with peace, love, and joy:
As Psalm 30:11-12 in The Passion Translation states:  Then he broke through and transformed all my wailing into a whirling dance of ecstatic praise! He has torn the veil and lifted from me the sad heaviness of mourning. He wrapped me in the glory-garments of gladness. 12 How could I be silent when it’s time to praise you? Now my heart sings out, bursting with joy— a bliss inside that keeps me singing, "I can never thank you enough!

However, He also expects us to dress appropriately, in love (Love does no ill to it's neighbor (I Cor. 13:4-8). Let us never dress to tempt another, for temptation never comes from God (James 1:13-14)!

Give to the Lord the glory due to His name; worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness or in holy array.--Psalm 29:2, AMPC, says. So it seems to me that "holy array," means the "beauty of holiness," or dressing modestly to the glory of God.

The LORD clothes the grass of the field, and compares our bodies to grass: 24 For, “All flesh is like grass, and all its glory like the flowers of the field; the grass withers and the flowers fall, 25 but the word of the Lord stands forever.” And this is the word that was proclaimed to you.…I Peter 1:24-25, Berean Study Bible

As the LORD Jesus says in Luke 12:27-28, "not even Solomon in all his glory was arrayed as a simple wildflower" that the LORD, Elohim, made! 27 Consider how the lilies grow: They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you, not even Solomon in all his glory was adorned like one of these. 28 If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the furnace, how much more will He clothe you, O you of little faith!…

Our "clothing" is much more than just the threads on our bodies!

However, clothing is important. Ask Adam and Eve!

Physical clothing represents the covering.

The covering is vitally important!

Our real covering is the strength God gives us by His Spirit, the "beautiful garments," mentioned here:  Awake, awake, put on your strength, O Zion; put on your beautiful garments, O Jerusalem, the holy city; for henceforth there shall no more come into you the uncircumcised and the unclean.--Isaiah 52:1 AMPC

Most of all, our true clothing--Covering--is the Blood of the LORD Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God, the Savior of the world, that He shed willingly for us on the cross to save us from our sins (John 3:15-17)!  Once we are born again, we are clothed with the Garments of Salvation, and the Robe of Righteousness (Isaiah 61). Hallelujah!

Clothing can affect the way we think about ourselves and others. For instance, someone who grew up in a house where they were often dressed in old clothes, with holes and tears (not put there on purpose, like so much of the clothing we see today!) and had to wear them year after year, did not feel very good about themselves (Christian or not). God is a good Father, and He provides well for His children.

Then again, we are not to respect others just because of what they wear, like James 2:2-4 states:

2 For if a person comes into your congregation whose hands are adorned with gold rings and who is wearing splendid apparel, and also a poor [man] in shabby clothes comes in, 3 And you pay special attention to the one who wears the splendid clothes and say to him, Sit here in this preferable seat! while you tell the poor [man], Stand there! or, Sit there on the floor at my feet! 4 Are you not discriminating among your own and becoming critics and judges with wrong motives? James 2:2-4, AMPC

Clothing is, ultimately, an attitude--strength, dignity, honor, righteousness in Christ Jesus. Glory to God! When the LORD talks about the Proverbs 31 Woman--which, by the way, is a compilation of women (thank goodness), according to an internationally-known and respected minister--He says:

25 Strength and dignity are her clothing and her position is strong and secure; she rejoices over the future [the latter day or time to come, knowing that she and her family are in readiness for it]! 26 She opens her mouth in skillful and godly Wisdom, and on her tongue is the law of kindness [giving counsel and instruction].--Proverbs 31:25, AMPC

The LORD is your Glory and the Lifter of your head. Do the best with what you have, and ask Him to help you. Most of all, ask Him daily to "let the beauty and delightfulness and favor of the LORD be upon you," and He will! You will attract others to Christ--which is why we're on the planet! The sooner more come to Him, the sooner we can all get out of here and go to Heaven!
