GOD'S PRINCIPLE OF JUDGMENT

by linzy bruno
6/28/2022 / Bible Studies

Aside from observations of those whose fruit of the Spirit is apparent, God's principle of judgment can be a tricky one to comprehend. That's because with those whom we know are saved, we're not as likely to judge. God’s Word clearly states that we are not to judge. But there are those verses that instruct us to do what appears to be the opposite, but those verses aren't telling us to judge another's heart, but to discern good from bad behaviors.

The judgment in which the Bible is referring is not of the action or behavior, but of the heart. To judge someone's behavior is a mere observation and one in which proper discernment is needed.

There is a biblically correct and a biblically incorrect way of applying God's Principle of judgment and it's up to the believer to discern this distinction. But how? The only trustworthy way is to dissect the Scriptures; helping us rightly divide the Truth and judge righteously. Moreover, Keeping in mind that it’s far more wise to judge the sin rather than the sinner's intent/motive.

Pretty much everyone is familiar with the verses that warn against our judgment of others

Romans 2:1, Matthew 7:1-3 & Luke 6:37

For it is God’s Job to judge, as recorded in

2Corinthians 5:10, Romans 2:5-12, Hebrews 13:4, James 4:12, 2Timothy 4:7-8 Proverbs 21:2 & Revelation 20:12-13

Moreover, the Word teaches that God’s people are not to be judged by others

John 3:18, Romans 8:1-2 & 14:3, Colossians 2:16-17 & 2Peter 2:9

In fact, God has given believers the authority to condemn the actions of false accusation and judge righteously--

No weapon formed against you shall prosper,
And every tongue which rises against you in judgment
You shall condemn.
This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord,
And their righteousness is from Me,”
Says the Lord.”
 (Isaiah 54:17)

“Do not judge according to appearance, but judge with righteous judgment.” (John 7:24)

And, furthermore, we will be judged with the same judgment we use on others

For with what judgment you judge, you will be judged; and with the measure you use, it will be measured back to you.” (Matthew 7:2)

There is also a Scripture that reveals how to keep oneself from judgment in James 5:12-

But above all, my brethren, do not swear, either by heaven or by earth or with any other oath. But let your “Yes” be “Yes,” and your “No,” “No,” lest you fall into judgment.”

(This Scripture is clearly an illustration of what we call integrity in our modern language.)

As was mentioned, believers who wait on God’s timing, are afforded the right to call out those who have conspired to harm their reputations, (Isaiah 54:17) but that isn’t all….

God’s Word also instructs believers to learn through Holy Spirit Wisdom whom they need to watch out for. (Not that we are wise to fully trust any person, only to God should we give our complete trust.)

We are instructed to use our God-given discernment, which cannot be accomplished without first judging the situation at hand and that includes the people involved. (Please note that God would have the judgment be on the action/behavior rather than that individual’s heart, as evidenced through these Scriptural examples).

This is evident through-- Matthew 7:16, 1John 4:1, 1Thessalonians 5:21 & Hebrews 5:14

We are not to judge others very simply because we mere humans could never do it accurately since we cannot know the condition of another’s heart. We are aware, however, of the good or evil behind the actions themselves, as we read in Matthew 7:16.

When love is the motive, that fact should be evident and have a major effect on how the rebuke is received. Rebuke without judgment is certainly tricky, but not impossible with prayer and the help of the Holy Spirit working to bring about the most positive outcome.

Furthermore, we all need to use this same discernment when choosing a Pastor or anyone we turn to for spiritual guidance.

In Conclusion:

#1). We are not equipped to judge anyone else, therefore, we need to leave that up to the Lord, as that is His JOB.

#2). God’s people are to be judged by no one, as God will have the last word….AND

#3). Discernment is in line with righteous judgment, but still it’s about one’s actions, not the heart that we judge. His Spirit helps us to discern evil from good for our own good so that we can keep ourselves and our families safe from all wickedness and the hidden evil intentions of others.
