BORN AGAIN, IN THE WORDS OF JESUS

by linzy bruno
8/04/2022 / Bible Studies

For anyone who desires to know how to be saved, Jesus has answered that question quite clearly in the Gospel of John—

The Lord has spoken, hence, there is no excuse, nor need for confusion (Romans 2:1). If we say we believe, we must be born again….To be born again is to live in a new way, according to God and by His Spirit, Who comes to live inside of all who are truly HIS...

3”
There was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. This man came to Jesus by night and said to Him, “Rabbi, we know that You are a teacher come from God; for no one can do these signs that You do unless God is with him.”

Jesus answered and said to him, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.”

Nicodemus said to Him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born?”

Jesus answered, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’ The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear the sound of it, but cannot tell where it comes from and where it goes. So is everyone who is born of the Spirit.” (It sounds like Jesus is describing freedom in this verse.)

Nicodemus answered and said to Him, “How can these things be?”

10 Jesus answered and said to him, “Are you the teacher of Israel, and do not know these things? 11 Most assuredly, I say to you, We speak what We know and testify what We have seen, and you do not receive Our witness. 12 If I have told you earthly things and you do not believe, how will you believe if I tell you heavenly things? 13 No one has ascended to heaven but He who came down from heaven, that is, the Son of Man who is in heaven. 14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up, 15 that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. 16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. 17 For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.

18 “He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 19 And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 20 For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed. 21 But he who does the truth comes to the light, that his deeds may be clearly seen, that they have been done in God.”” (John 3:1-21)

This spiritual condition Jesus has laid out for Nicodemus is the very definition of Christianity in which all believers need to conceive of in order that they/we be in Christ. Then, our relationship with Him is born and our exciting, new spiritual journey is ready to take flight and soar!

Moreover, this moment opens up a whole new life; anything is possible with Christ Jesus, just check out Luke 18:24-43. Interesting isn’t it, that Jesus would make the contrast between His Majesty working in us and the coldness of the superficial life?

When we are born again, we abide in Him, we are transformed into a new creature in Christ, as we read in 2Corinthians 5:17.

Furthermore, it is noteworthy to mention the salvation prayer that seems to be so hotly debated these days. After much investigation, it appears that in and of itself, the prayer is neither good, nor bad, but can be utilized in either direction.

The Good Way—If said with the right motive, as an avenue to kick off a new life in Him, it’s perfectly fine and harmless.

However, the bad way is that believers that have not given themselves over to the teachings of our Lord Jesus may think that all they have to do is say the salvation prayer and they’re done; they see no need to seek Him. But the truth is that God wants to have a relationship with us through Christ and other than salvation, relationship is the whole point and salvation and relationship must be seen as the criteria for our spiritual journey

The salvation prayer is fine for those who chose to proclaim it, however it is not necessary; not having been commanded by our Lord. But, Jesus did teach us to confess with our mouths; not the same as saying a prayer, but relatable, nonetheless. Confession implies either talking with fellow believers or declaring aloud that Jesus Christ is Lord. Therefore, confession of faith is closely related to the salvation prayer, and perhaps that’s where it originated.

Thankfully, God understands human weakness and deals mercifully with all who are in Him and have an unfeigned heart before Him, as we read in 1Samuel 16:7.

And as we read in John 3:8,  abiding in Christ is freedom. In fact, freedom is only possible for those who abide in Him, which we ultimately learn for ourselves as the inevitable result of trying to live without Him…..

Furthermore, when we abide in the freedom that is in Christ, there is no loss, only gain. Jesus taught His disciples that when we give up our lives, we are actually saving our lives and the Apostle Paul teaches his church in Philippians 1:21, that to die is gain.

For those who believe that all we need is to acknowledge Him and then we are free to ignore Him the rest of the time are not born again of the spirit and may not even be considered saved by God. After all, even Satan knows God is real, which proves that head knowledge alone cannot be considered equivalent to salvation:

19 “You believe that there is one God. You do well. Even the demons believe—and tremble!” (James 2:19)

NOTE: Notwithstanding, baptism is often thought to be essential to salvation as it does appear in verse 5, however, Jesus may have been referring to water as in our earthly birth, as we are born through water.

A solid argument for this stance is that baptism is meant for a declaration of faith, as a sign, not a law. Wouldn't that be rather like Old Testament legalism to have a ritualistic requirement for salvation? And wouldn't it be mentioned in many other verses being so vitally important?

8 “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God,” (Ephesians 2:8)
