P.O.W.E.R.* Girl III - Ch. 11 - Healing on Christmas Communion

Within a half hour, they picked up Ms. Sophia and were at the church walking into the sanctuary, where they found Risa, Robin, and Lucas. The candlelight graced the atmosphere as Pearl and her family filed into the third row and sat down. They rested, as “O Holy Night” flowed over the sound system, in flowing flute and piano.

That is so beautiful, Lord! thought Pearl. I want harp lessons, and I’ll be happy to play the harp next year for You!

The members of the choir then filled the chairs behind the pulpit, and led the congregation in three beloved Christmas hymns.

Some people started singing softly, and Pearl joined in. Soon, she heard the others around her raise their voices, but when she peeked at Xi on her left, she could see her lips weren’t moving. She probably doesn’t know these, Pearl thought.

Then she heard singing in Spanish, and looked over at Risa on her right, but realized it was Ms. Sophia.

Neat! thought Pearl. LORD, You understand every language, ‘cause You created them all!

Robert sang the loudest. I wish Queen Mother would shush him! thought Pearl. I’m sure he doesn’t know all the words! But at least he’s not mad or sad.

“He’s off key, but he's so adorable!” Robin whispered.

Pearl nodded and smiled. At least he’s happy! she thought.

As the song ended, the pastor came on stage and motioned for all to stand.

Pearl felt a stirring within and all around her, as if warm electricity was flowing. Ooh, Jesus, I feel You here with us! Pearl thought. I love You! She looked at Robin on her right. They smiled and nodded at each other. She feels You too! Cool!.

The choir sang “O Come, Let Us Adore Him” as the ushers passed out Communion.

“What’s that?” whispered Xi, on her left, looking at the tiny cup of grape juice.

“It’s the body and blood of Jesus,” Pearl whispered back.

“What?!” said Xi. “How can—”

The couple in front turned back to look at her.

Shh!” said Pearl’s mother gently, on the other side of Xi. She touched Xi’s arm and learned over to whisper in her ear. “This is just a symbol of The Last Supper,” she said. “Remember?”

Xi shook her head. “I’m not sure.”

“We do this to celebrate Jesus dying for us on the cross,” Pearl’s mother said, in a low voice. “Only true Christians can do this,” she said, and smiled. “Now, get the cracker off the top and hold it in your left hand, then peel back the top from the juice—”

“Will you do it?” Xi whispered loudly. “I don’t want to mess it up.”

“You can’t mess it up,” Pearl said. “Just chill, Xi.” She patted her shoulder.

Xi sighed. “All this is new to me.”

Pearl’s mother nodded and whispered more. “I know, Sweetie. You don’t have to do this if you don’t want to.”

Xi looks mad, thought Pearl. What’s going on, Lord?

“Here, let me fix it for you.” She took the cup from Xi’s hand, and peeled back the plastic on top, exposing the cracker, then handed it back to her.

“Now,” Pearl whispered, in a soothing tone, “just listen to the pastor and do what he does. When he eats the cracker, you eat it. Then, he’ll probably say a bit, before he drinks the grape juice. Just follow him.”

“But I’m not a believer,” said Xi, almost growling.

Man, Xi is acting weird! thought Pearl. Help her know You, Lord! Let her feel Your Presence like never before! Heal her heart, Jesus!

She leaned over and whispered into Xi’s right ear. “We do this like the disciples did. It’s the Last Supper because it was the last meal Jesus had with them that last night before He went to the cross.”

“I am not a Christian, and I am not doing this!” said Xi, out loud.

The people in the row ahead of her looked back at her. One shook his head and put his finger to his lips.

Pearl’s mother touched Xi’s should and held out her hand. “Please give me the cup, and just have a seat, dear,” she said, in a commanding whisper.

Xi gave her the cup and sat in the seat, slumping, with her arms folded.

LORD, help her believe You’re real! Pearl prayed. Only You can help her!

Pastor John said, “Let us celebrate what our Lord Jesus did for us on the cross, over 2,000 years ago!”

An usher served Communion to the choir and then to the pastor.

The pastor opened the cup, and holding up the cracker, said, “Lord, we praise You. We thank You. We honor and adore and magnify You. You are the King of kings and the LORD of Lords, and we are so grateful for Your mercy in sending Jesus. Lord Jesus, we are forever thankful that You gave Your life for us on the cross; Your body was broken that we might be made whole. Thank You for becoming the curse so we could be made the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus—”

“He became the curse?” said Xi again out loud. “How—”

Pearl quickly switched places with Pearl, then hugged Xi close and put her finger to her lips. “Shh, please, Xi. I’ll explain later!”

Lord, help her be quiet! thought Pearl. She’s making more trouble than Robert! But I know she wants to understand.

The pastor broke the cracker. “The body of Jesus was broken on the cross for every person to be healed and whole—in body, spirit, and soul,” he said. “We praise You Lord, for dying for us so we can live the Zoe life!”

He put the cracker in his mouth, and the people did the same.

Then he took the cup, and said, “This juice represents the blood of the Lamb Who gave every drop, so we could be continuously cleansed, and acceptable to our holy God. Thank You, Lord, for Your blood!”

He drank the juice, and the people did the same.

“Let us be silent a moment as we adore Him in our hearts,” said the pastor.

Lord, You are so good! thought Pearl. I love You, I love You, I love—

She heard Xi crying silently, and saw that Queen Mother reach over to grab Xi’s hand.

Thank You, Father, You are healing Xi’s heart, and causing her to want Your Salvation! You are truly the Lord Who heals us!
