FREE FROM SELF

Freedom in Christ does not refer to freedom from responsibility, nor will it keep us from the wrath of others. What this actually points to is freedom from offense.

Moreover, this principle of freedom allows us to abide in the freedom to say no to ourselves; it is the freedom from the bondage of self. This is not referring to the slavery the world imposes through imprisonments of any sort, but the bondage of sin and useless things that keep believers in the preoccupation of self. Sin keeps us in bondage to things that offend our Lord God.

And when we abide in the liberty only Christ Jesus can provide, we are free to grow in Christlikeness. God’s Word illustrates this precept through the following passages:

Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage.” (Galatians 5:1)

Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” They answered Him, “We are Abraham’s descendants, and have never been in bondage to anyone. How can You say, ‘You will be made free’?” Jesus answered them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, whoever commits sin is a slave of sin. And a slave does not abide in the house forever, but a son abides forever. Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.” (John 8:31-36)

Now the Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.” (2Corinthians 3:17)

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law. And those who are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.  Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another.” (Galatians 5:22-26)
