The Holy Spirit Will Warn You of The Wrong Direction

by Tonja Taylor
11/02/2022 / Christian Living

But when He, the Spirit of Truth (the Truth-giving Spirit) comes, He will guide you into all the Truth (the whole, full Truth). For He will not speak His own message [on His own authority]; but He will tell whatever He hears [from the Father; He will give the message that has been given to Him], and He will announce and declare to you the things that are to come [that will happen in the future].--John 16:13, AMPC

Many times in life, my mind and flesh wanted to do something, and I did it anyway--ignoring the fluttering inside, the lack of peace; the sweet Holy Spirit Who knows all things about me and what's ahead, trying to warn me not to go that way.

Of course, either my plans ended in disaster, and the LORD had to rescue me (Great is His faithfulness, mercy, and lovingkindness!). He "plucked my feet out of the net," as King David states in Psalm 25. Otherwise, my plans, which seemed so sensible at the time, just didn't have the outcome I'd expected.

Through the years, I've learned to trust God more, which means, in large part, to listen better and obey, no matter what my mind or flesh, or even other people, who aren't me and aren't hearing what I'm hearing in my heart from God, try to tell me to do.

The sweet, gentle, all-knowing Holy Spirit Who is God loves you, and wants only the best life for you (John 10:10). He will warn you when you are going the wrong direction, and when you listen--even if it doesn't make sense to your mind--you will be so glad you did!

The LORD is our Good Shepherd, and He leads us, His "sheep", by His Word and by His Voice whispered to our hearts.  He is the Prince of Peace, and leads us by calmness, peace, that knowing of "rightness" in our hearts. Our minds (and the enemy) can throw up doubts, but when we wait on the LORD, resting in Him and trusting Him to verify His leading, He always will! He is faithful forever!

Then we Your people, the sheep of Your pasture, will give You thanks forever; we will show forth and  publish Your praise from generation to generation.--Psalm 79:13, AMPC

When you just know that you know that you know something--like you know that you are born again by believing in the shed blood of Jesus Christ on the cross over 2,000 years ago to pay for your sins, and no one can tell you otherwise!--then you can't explain it, but you understand that it is God Who created and sustains and loves and saves you giving you direction.

In one way, the ways of the Spirit of God are mysterious.

Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unfathomable (inscrutable, unsearchable) are His judgments (His decisions)! And how untraceable (mysterious, undiscoverable) are His ways (His methods, His paths)!--Romans 11:33, AMPC

In another, the ways of God are so simple: listen and obey!

If they obey and serve Him, they shall spend their days in prosperity and their years in pleasantness and joy.--Job 36:11, AMPC

The more we spend time with God in His Word, in prayer, listening to Bible-based teaching in church and online, and worshiping and praising Him, the more our souls (minds, wills, emotions) are aligned with Him, and the easier it is to hear His Voice, to understand His ways. Hallelujah!

He is a good, good Father Who only wants--and sent LORD Jesus to die for!--the best for us, His kids!

Psalm 25, written by King David, has great comfort and guidance in trusting our faithful God. The LORD is so good, He guides even sinners (as much as He can get through to their unregenerated spirits and seared souls! He gave man a free will, and will not overstep that. His Spirit does influence mankind's hearts--spirits--though. Thank goodness, for no man can come to God but that the Holy Spirit draw him or her!), which means those who have not received Christ Jesus as their LORD. (But He knows who will!)

Here are verses from Psalm 25 (AMPC), which have helped me know more deeply that I can trust God to truly guide me in right paths, (like the better-known Psalm 23 says):

Guide me in Your truth and faithfulness and teach me, for You are the God of my salvation; for You [You only and altogether] do I wait [expectantly] all the day long.

Good and upright is the Lord; therefore will He instruct sinners in [His] way.

He leads the humble in what is right, and the humble He teaches His way.

10 All the paths of the Lord are mercy and steadfast love, even truth and faithfulness are they for those who keep His covenant and His testimonies.

12 Who is the man who reverently fears and worships the Lord? Him shall He teach in the way that he should choose.

14 The secret [of the sweet, satisfying companionship] of the Lord have they who fear (revere and worship) Him, and He will show them His covenant and reveal to them its [deep, inner] meaning.

15 My eyes are ever toward the Lord, for He will pluck my feet out of the net.

When you need guidance (every day, every hour, some days especially!), reading these verses out loud will strengthen and help you, and the Holy Spirit Who is God will help you understand His perfect way for you.

Whether He is showing you to not take that third job (like He did for me, very recently!), or to break off a wrong relationship or pursue a new one that will draw you closer to Him; to change jobs or other major things, He will help you know that you know that you know the way to go.

Even if you miss it, He is faithful, forever, and will work it out for your best and His glory, because He loves you (Romans 8:28, Genesis 50:20)! Hallelujah!
