It Ain't Fair......

by Shannon Heiden
4/28/2009 / Devotionals

Then you will understand what is right and just and fair in every good path.
Proverbs 2:9

Beautiful One, how many times have you heard the saying;"Life isn't fair?" Maybe you've said it yourself? Even though we all know this to be true, even still, things, people and circumstances come our way that are seemingly so beyond unfair, that if we are not careful as to how we recover, it could leave us worse off than when they found us.

Fair, it is a word that resonates deep within us. As children, most of us were taught and heard consistently to play fair and be nice..And as children always like to do, we fought it for a few moments because we were staunch in our stand of having our way, we didn't really care about being fair. Fast forward. By the time we reach adulthood, we have experienced enough successes and setbacks, some to our credit and some to the credit of others. It took no time in the game of life, to realize that not all the players, play nice let alone fair.

Sometimes we find ourselves in circumstance beyond our control, that's just a fact of life. There are a lot of things we will never have a say in. But then, there are things we will encounter that we are very much a part of, but whether or not we created or established ourselves within the vicissitudes of life, isn't the issue. The issue is; we have a choice as to how we will react and respond.

Usually the very things we don't like or don't want, seem to find their way to us. We attract what we are.

In every situation, dilemma or decision, there lies before us a choice. Will we get better or grow bitter? Will we learn from it or remain blinded? Can this situation grow and stretch me, or shrink and stall me? Usually when faced with difficulty or hardships especially at the perceived hands of another, we have the proclivity to want justice and assign blame for the occurrence. Most of the time, it is another s fault, very rarely is it our own.

I don't know about you, but I'd like to think that I don't give another person that much power over me and my circumstances. If it is completely your fault and none of mine, than that would require me waiting on you to change before I see a different result, and I don't have that much time......

But if I can really evaluate my responses, my actions, and my contributions, than a change for the better would show up faster on the horizon, and actually work on my behalf..

Even still, there are those moments in life when we will encounter the ugliness of injustice and unfair play.

How many of us know what it is to have been dealt the hand of unfairness and it took us a while before we allowed ourselves to believe and hope again? When we encounter people who deal unjustly with us, especially other Christians the pain and torment can render us ineffective if we are not careful to pull out the root of the offense at the onset. As with anything, if left to marinate, the stench will permeate everything it comes into contact with.

Beautiful One, one of the common myths we believe is that we can trust Christians because they are fair. I disagree with that statement. We as Christians should be fair, but should and is are two different things. You can no more trust someone because they're a Christian no more than you should trust someone you barely know. Being a Christian does not make you fair, just or trustworthy, it means you are a work in progress towards being perfected in those areas, but trust and fair play is something each one of us needs to develop and establish within our own hearts first, before we can extend to another.

Even still, which among us has been overlooked, lied about, talked about, betrayed, disregarded, disrespected, unloved, un favored, abused, cast off, ignored? Which of us has been dealt a hand in life that has severed our hearts into pieces? A loved one passed unexpectedly, an illness showed up, an affair happened, a pink slip came and to add insult to injury, your enemy got your position. A miscarriage happened again, a friend walks off with no rhyme or reason. Whatever the situation, rape, abuse or violence showed up knocking on your door, maybe as a child, maybe not. Does it matter?

It hurts, it's wrong and it's unfair.

You see others who just seem to skip through the tulips, with their loving marriages, families and jobs. Not you, your just broken and tattered because no one took the time to tell you that although life is unfair, God is too....

Beautiful one, God is unfair.

It isn't fair that He loves the unlovely, He forgives sinners and heals the sick. It isn't fair that He left his throne to come to earth and bear the sins of the world, of the creation He took the time to intricately create and breathe life into. It isn't fair that Jesus went around doing good and got repaid in full by evil. It isn't fair that he had to wrestle and sweat drops of blood in the garden and accept the challenge set before him, separation from unity with the Father for the sake of all the world. It isn't fair that he was betrayed into the hands of men, lied about, falsely accused, spit upon, beaten to a pulp and crucified. It isn't fair that although he paid the highest price for you and I so that we wouldn't have to, we still doubt and reject him.

No, it ain't fair that we don't have a God who is just enough, but more than enough, who doesn't treat us as our sins deserve. It ain't fair, that we have an unchanging God who can change any heart and any situation. Maybe he wont change the circumstance, He didn't for Jesus, but He will change you in it....

Beautiful One, Just Believe and remember truly that it just ain't fair.....
